So today, took the famn damily over to the sister in laws so the kids could play. On the way there, I took my no-left-turn making 1990 burb into some loose sand and let it eat... and ever since, I've got a helluva clicking, very much rotational and related to vehicle speed, coming from the 241... anyone, anyone? is this a reasonably easy tcase to rebuild? or do I drive like a grandma until I can scrounge up a 27 spline 205, th350 adapter and whatever the other part is I need? with a 205, what's required of the driveshafts?

---need help---

Purchased the tailshaft bushing and seal from advanced auto, and when i put the bushing in the freezer, it slipped right into the housing, it has since warmed up, and still isn't snug. does this thing have to be put in with some sealant on it? one wouldn't think so..

Not familar with that one, there are plenty of folks here who are. But, are you sure its coming from inside the case?

A cracked or damaged U-joint will make all kinds of different noises.

Also, double check and make sure the shifter is centered in the correct gear.
I had the linkage get loose on a 205 once, and it was just lightly touching 4wd when it was supposed to be in 2wd.

yeah. i jacked the rear up, and with it in neutral, when you spin the driveshaft, it is most definitely inside the t-case. i never had a problem with my 208 in my k10, and it got treated BAAAD... 241 uses atf, no?

Yup, uses Dextron II ATF. I've abused mine to no end, run it out of fluid, run it the last couple trips with a broken off tail shaft housing and she is still rockin' on strong

russ, that's why I can't figure this out.. this turd has a poor shifting 700r4 and 31s lol... gonna pop the driveshaft out and the tailshaft housing off of it tomorrow and have a little peak... if it's shot, it gets a 205... soon as i figure out exactly what's needed..

ford... very interesting... maybe it's just a broken snapring then, and has likely trashed the output shaft... well i'm popping the tailshaft housing tomorrow and having a look.. we shall see.. thanks for that link!

snapring intact. going to order that kit anyhow. the noise appears to be eminating from the slip yoke on the driveshaft having eaten up the tailshaft bushing. advanced auto actually has one in stock, gonna grab it and be back on schedule!!

alrighty, so i pulled the tailshaft bushing out, and popped the new one in the freezer for about 20 minutes, went to put it in, and it fell right through.. didn't think my freezer was THAT cold...

Where did you buy the bushing from. had one that came from Autozone and it was to same. Ended up going to NAPA to get one. It fit perfect.

advanced auto. took it back and got emery cloth. have a customer that owns a tranny shop looking for one tomorrow, and a friend that works at a chevy dealer looking as well. put the old one back in, all cleaned up, gotta go to work lol

I rebuilt my 241 a couple years ago. Got the bearing/seal kit from Standard Drivetrain...had everything I needed, seems chain was $80, bearing/seal kit was about $125, and I needed a range fork $60. I bench pressed it in and out, cleaned everything and had it back in took about 2 hours and a 6 pack of Fat Tire. I am not a mechanic, I just work on stuff. I was also about 57 when I did it.

I also have a thing called a transfer case saver...takes the place of the tailshaft snapring that is prone to breakage. I just got this new puter yesterday and haven't reloaded all my links. I'll try to find the link if you are interested. I believe buying a used TC (chain type) is rolling the dice that you are buying someone else's problem for close to the same money you can go thru yours and know what you've got. Just sayin...

Yessir, Fordum posted a link to it, i'll be ordering one. I would never buy a used chain drive tcase, i would just up to a gear to gear..

If you still have your old 'Puter, you should be able to export all your links. Don't know which browser you are using, but all I know of have that option. Try the bookmarks label at the top of the page.
Once you find it, you can export all your bookmarks as a file. Just copy that file to a thumb drive, take it to the new computer and select import.

I know this is an old tread, but my 91 starting clicking while driving the other day, so i pulled the rear shaft and it went away. I recently replaced the rear u joint and the tailshaft seal. When I pulled the rear shaft fluid came out. what could have caused fluid to come out. Also what could cause the clicking .
