No idea the condition of the cases I have internally, but I'm curious what others thoughts are regarding rebuilding of the cases in general.

I'll be going with a SYE kit of course, once they are available and I have one in hand, I want to be able to throw the case together and not have to worry about tearing it apart again (hopefully) for a long time/forever.

I assume the consensus will be to just buy a master rebuild kit and call it good? Chain comes with? If not, good idea to replace just for insurance?

Can anyone recommend a vendor for high quality kits? I notice that JB Conversions lists full and partial master rebuild kits ($225/200 respectively), then lists a chain separate ($150). From what I can find there is no explanation of what either kit comes with. Any rebuild kits out there worth anything that come with the chain?

Edit: All 241/243 chains the same? Are "National" parts any good? Rockauto is supposedly clearancing some National 241 chains for $49, and probably $203 shipping.

I've yet to take one apart that needed any work at all. They have nothing but roller bearings inside, shift fork pads and a couple seals outside.

I know the fork pads are the common wear area, so figured those would be a given. External seals I can see, bearings I'm iffy on as I'm not interested in getting chinese junk, nor really interested in replacing them if there is no issue. The t-cases all seem to lube the bearings adequately.

Is there any spec or measurement of the chain that can tell you it should be replaced?

I pulled mine and the shift fork pads looked brand new so I just cleaned everything, installed the SYE kit and put it back together. This was a junkyard TC also.

I'm torn...rebuild or just disassemble, inspect, throw back together if no obvious problems?

I just don't want to put it in there, run it for a bit, then see Dexron puddles under the truck because I didn't do the seals. Or hear some whine from bearings as the case was run with low fluid, Etc.

I *think* I can ID the one I pulled out of a running/driving truck. I know that one was full of fluid, so at least I know it wasn't being run dry at that time.

pull it apart and see what you have inside. I haven't run mine yet, so....., but it did look like it was lightly used. I did swap some seals going to the SYE though.

Kind of what I was thinking...since it's already going to be torn apart, and it's a "spare" to go back in when I have the SYE done, I'm thinking at a minimum seals, pads if it needs them, and try it that way, assuming nothing else is obviously wrong.

Can get a gasket/seal kit for ~$17 looks like.

JB Master Rebuild Kit

I ordered the JB master kit $225, didn't come with everything in the picture, missing the screen, and what appears in the picture to be silicone sealer. after emailing about the screen, it was sent to me. the kit did not come with what I felt was a correct seal which I picked up from NAPA.

I googled the part number on the box I received from JB, BK241A and found this kit, less the screen and sealer for $65 from Ebay.

not one of the seals that came in the JB kit had any part numbers or markings on it.

Disappointed!!!

Now you have it back together, do you notice any different noise when you turn your output flange back and forth, when standing upright? Then lay it in the working orientation and no sounds (normal)? Just curious because I just did my JB conversion sye kit....

JB didn't have the SYE kit in stock, I got my kit from Jess, High Angle Driveline.

Didn't torque down the front or rear output yokes yet, had an issue with the spacer that came with jess's kit, he sent me another, should be here in couple of days.

But spins good and shifts really well right know.

Totally just dawned on me, I get the noise before my flange is bolted on. Makes sense it will suck it in just a bit and I bet the noise goes away. Thanks for helping me realize this! I bet I'm good now...
