ok.. so the housing cracked on my transfers case (rear output shaft housing) so after much searching for the part i gave in and bought a new transfer case. i thought i had a 208..being a newby i didnt know.. so i found a replacement 208...get home, look into it a little bit, realize i had a 241. is the 208 im utting in stronger or in anyway better then my 241? if not let me know so i dont make a mistake. thanks, dj.

The 208 is technically marginally weaker then the 241. It is not enough to worry about though. It is a direct bolt up replacement for a 241 though as long as the input spline count is the same.

208/241's from behind 700R4's have 27 splines on the input.
208/241's from behind SM465 (manuals) and TH400's have 32 splines on the input.

Was there ever such a thing as a LH drop TH400 or manual app. 241?

The other difference is the the low range gearing. The 208 has 2.62:1 ratio & the 241 has 2.72:1. I could be wrong on exact #'s, but am close enough. You probably won't notice a difference between the two.

Also, what year rig is yours? In 90, the 241 was electronic speedo whereas the 89 versions were mechanical.

ftcjimmy,

if you're that concerned with strength, you should look into a 205. they're pretty much bomb proof -- not only is the case stronger as it's cast-iron vs. aluminum. the internals are gear-to-gear not chain driven. i have a 205 if you're interested in one. im in philadelphia, pa
