I'm looking for a NP241C T-case and I have been looking through the yards. If I find one what kind of checks can I do to check it's functionality before hauling it all the way home? Just a few checks I could do in and out of the vehicle to make sure it's worth my time to buy.

I asked the same question a few weeks back when I bought mine. I didn't get much response other than "its hard to tell".

All I ended up doing was shaking the input and output shafts to try and see if the bearings were any good. If there isn't much play in them I guess you should be good to go. :dunno:

The only other thing I thought of (after the fact) would be to maybe check the magnet in the bottom of the case to see if there is a ton of metal chips on it. Of course in order to do that you'll need to partially disassemble it. A few sockets and a decent set of lock-ring pliers would do it though. Doesn't take more than about 15 minutes unless the lock-rings give you too much trouble.

Nothing but putting power to it (without a teardown) is going to guarantee it's ok to run.

IMO you buy these things for as cheap as you can on Craigslist ($100 or less) and expect to put a full rebuild kit in it. Should be what, $3-400 total? Good for another 20+ years. :)

These are pretty reliable transfer cases seldom needing more than fork inserts if they were kept full of oil. You have a very strong chance of getting a great unit unless you pull it from something that spent time underwater or was run dry.
