i have to ask this, how much work is it to convert, a buddy has one for real real cheap.........anyone fill me in on this, ill do it if its not too bad. that was a good..real good idea...someone else gets the credit... so if you guys know please fill me in....thanks

ten times over thankyou, i doesnt seem like much to fix up.....muchly appreciated..

24-12v conversions have always confused me, because none of the "correct" or "common" solutions offer what I need. I like the idea of the dual alternators, because it gives 2400 watts to play with before dipping into the batteries, which is good for a LOT of usage- 20 amps at 120VAC (although losses in an inverter would make it less than that- you get the idea), which is fairly substantial.

Converting to 12v with a single alternator would result in halving the output. Still pretty substantial at 1200 watts, but I'd rather have more than less.

So, in theory I'd say that one could just run the alternators and batteries in parallel rather than series (just ground them both to chassis ground rather than to each other) and then you'd have a 12v/200A system. Granted, one of the alternators' voltage regulators is going to cause it to kick in slightly before the other, so most of the time one will just be freewheeling, but when you put it under load, you have the extra power.

Since these trucks are primarily 12v, though (blower, lights, etc.), the conversion is just a matter of changing the starter and minor re-wiring. I'd double check the wires to the starter as well, since they'll now be carrying twice the current.

conversion all done, works good. used a junkyard starter i got 4 15 bucks....

No brace, the suburban didnt have one and the only one i have was from the military truck..that wont fit...is it really needed..? i have no idea what to do with it..

Yes, it will cost $15 to buy a new one from the chevy dealer too. If you don't put it on, you will snap off starter bolts. Not a fun chore to get those out either.
