i recently got a 68 c-10 w/a 250 I6. i recently read a thread where someone bought a mid 80's truck that had a 250 I6 in it. my question is can i buy a hei dizzy for a mid 80's 250 I6 and put the new model hei in the 68 model 250 I6, or did something change that wouldn't allow this swap? thanks in advance

I see no reason why you wouldnt be able to, should be just like swapping from points to HEI on a sbc. Just need 12V key on power to the coil.

However I do not know for sure, just my .02c

I did it in my 70 Blazer, with a 250. The kicker is, the HEI is a V8 length unit, which is too short. There is a SPECIAL extension, which pins to the end of the shaft, to reach the oil pump. I found one, NIB. Tomorrow, I will dig up the box and post the Delco Part Number.

If you pull the dizzy from an intact engine, it will have the extension, attached. I bought my dizzy off e bay and the jerk kept the extension.

With the HEI, my old 6 popper starts quicker, and seems to pull thru the gears quicker.

I think the 250 sixes will interchange OK,the 292 I think has a different length maybe, not sure--they are a taller block than all the other straight sixes..I have a complete 250 HEI distributor from a 1981 250,that has the coil in the cap I saved when I swapped a V8 in my 81 G-10 van ..I was surprised to find it IS the same basic casting as a V8 one, with a different cap and reluctor!..some years of the straight sixes had an external ignition coil that bolted to the block,I think 1975-78 or so,but you can swap the newer cap on with the integral coil if desired..
