Have a line on one and did a little reading up.

They're made by AAM and are used on the 2001 and up 2500 Duramax.

I believe that they have some sort of balancer on the pinion and they have factory disc brakes.

Is this axle worth purchasing? I'm guessing the aftermarket support for these is less than a Corp 10.5" 14BFF.

I know that I'll have to relocate spring perches and shock tabs.

Is the diff cover the same?
Is aftermarket support any good?
Are there benefits to running this axle over a Corp 10.5"?
Is the width going to be correct for a 73'-'87 1/2 ton?
Are there a good selection of lockers for this axle?
Is it stronger than the Corp 10.5"?
Would this axle be compatible with a DIY4X 14BFF Guardsman

Basically is it worth purchasing and putting under my truck and are there any problems that I should expect along the way?

PM Luke...Demon44...he has one I believe he's putting in a CK truck

Its way more expensive than a 14 bolt, its heavier, ground clearance is worse with one, the disk brakes it has are expensive to maintain. A Detroit is outrageous as well.

Is it stronger, yes, is it worth it to me personally. no. a 14ff can be built stout, and really is stout stock anyways. If your breaking a FF axle repeatedly, your either doing something you shouldnt be, or you have alot of HP. And by alot I mean alot, not 500.

I have a 2011 2500HD (assume same axle) and an 88 Blazer with CUCV axles. I can tell you that the HD axle is considerably larger and the ground clearance is significantly worse. I mean it's a beast.

I agree that the 14FF is the most logical choice for a CK truck. You may find a deal on the AAM axle, but 14b are cheap. I just don't see a big advantage. Most modern vehicles have a wider wheelbase and the wheels have positive offsets (pretty much no outer lip if you look at new cars). Without going out and running a tape measure I'd venture to say it just might be wider than a front axle on a C/K which would be...weird.

Thanks for the info guys. I found a good 'ol regular 14BFF out of a CUCV locally for a good price, I'm going to pass on the newer style one.

Thanks again!

I remember reading somewhere that you can convert the old style 10.5ff to use the newer aam disk brakes setup. Not sure if its cheap enough to buy for those parts if you want to convert it.

Well I placed an order with DIY4X today. Got the 14BFF disc brake brackets, pinion guard, flat diff cover and spring plates.

I'll just be doing a regular old disc brake conversion.

CUCV 14bff should be 4.56's and have a factory detroit, just FYI in case you didn't know that. I have a CUCV set (14bff & d60).

On a side not, also on the AAM axles, I am not sure if there is a year difference, but they have a really strange u-joint size on the pinion (not sure on the exact size). My bro pulled front and rear axles out of a 2011 (I think) 3/4 chevy diesel and put them under his 2000 3/4 suburban. He found out later that the u-joint was some weird size and had to do some modification.

Thanks for the info. Mine has 4.56 and is open, the P.O. removed the Detroit and put new spider gears in.

Kinda glad I didn't go with the 11.5" 14 bolt, just seems like trouble and headaches.

Update, he put a 2001 aam 11.5" in the rear of his burban. AAM uses a 1415 instead of a 1410. Basically it's their proprietary ujoint but it has an identical cap size but barely smaller on the diameter, just by about .010". A careful flapwheel job on the 1410 and it fits perfectly into the 1415 yoke.

Ps, the 11.5" is not a 14 bolt, it is just called the AAM 11.5".

When I was ordering a locker for my rear the vendor asked what rear axle. Aam or 14b, are used and the differece is the actual 14b still has the removable pinion in front and aam does not. Just sayin

I found an 03 AAM 11.5 out of a dmax 2500hd for my burb. It's heavier than the 14b I had in there and I now have dual puck calipers with a parking brake. The 14b carrier with a Detroit is a direct fit. I had to relocate spring perches and added shock mounts. It's wider by 1.5" but makes my 89 burb feel more stable. I only paid $300 for it. I highly recommend this swap. B
