I need to order more chips and think from reading the 2732 is what come in the 1227747 but the 2732a is a better chip that will work the same with a $42 mask in the 7747?

I believe the 2732a is what came in them.
Why mess with those nasty UV chips when it is so easy to convert to a 27sf512 or 29c256?

Is that the moates thing were you have to solder in a newpiece for the chip?

Yep, it's easy to do and the chips are so much more reliable. After having 8 out of 10 2732a chips not program after being erased I just gave up on the whole mess and went to flash chips.

I'm running one of Moates ZIF's...no soldering required.

If I got off my rear and tuned it I'd be able to ditch the ZIF so I could put the cover back on the PROM....but the trucks been in dusty environs multiple times and hasn't given me any problems as it is.

I think it's the "ostrich" that Southernspeed was running, and he had nothing but good things to say about it, and is probably the way to go if you don't have the EEPROM stuff yet.

Well if it were for my truck I probably would. But right now I am doing several for freinds who have stock engines, some chevy, some IH, Ford, Mopar Jeep that are doing GM TBI conversions so I don't wan't to convert that many ECM's.

I think I over erased this last batch of 2732 and got four that the bin looks good but when I put the chip in all I get is the flashing SES again.

What is the least time you can use on a 2732 or 2732a? And is there something better without the conversion?

I've got a USB pocket programmer III already with UV eraser...

I've got a pocket programmer II as well, on long term loan to me lol.

Anyways, if you already have that, all you'd need is the ZIF adapter and the right chip(s). The ZIF adapter just plugs into the ECM.

I really haven't looked at prices, maybe the chips aren't worth a swap, but if you are datalogging, burning, repeating until it's right, the ZIF is a godsend.

Where the heck did you get a UV eraser? I figured those went the way of the dinosaurs. Not making fun, just folks were steering me away from UV when I first started contemplating tuning over 4 years ago.

:D Me to but they had one at
the same place that sells the Pocket programmer...

Show me this ZIF adapter and chips please. This may be the way to go on some with cams etc. But most that I do are bone stock engine swaps I can get right on one data log. It's more turning off EGR and other error ses lights.

I prefer to use the adapter, I've not had much luck just using a ZIF in the stock socket. He has directions on how to do it on his site. Looks like your programmer will support 27sf512 chips.:D

Craig has about everything you need.
So it just hangs out the top of the ECM? Said something in there about doing it differant and it will be lower? What do you do to erase this new chip?

Yeah I've been using the 512's.

The setup I've got I'm pretty sure is:

Apparently the TBI ECM's might have a different pin setup? Not positive, would probably just take some reading. Mine pokes out of the case where the PROM plate is screwed in. I THINK you can hardwire these to the ECM, but I'd think that you'd get the burn right, and put it back together the way it was stock. That'd be me though. For tuning you can leave it poking out. It's not much, maybe 1/2" at most on mine.

But if you are just doing a one time burn, taking the original image, editing things that trip a check engine light, then you would probably feel you wasted the money. The ZIF really only helps when you are pulling the chip and re-burning.

From what I hear the UV is an imprecise science and can lead to problems, it would be just one more thing for me to screw up. :) I also know though, that my burning will take various edits, and even things like fan speed, or crank time before fuel are fun to play with, just a little bit here and there. This makes it easier, even for us old schoolers with the PP2. :)

The PP2 will "blank" the chips. They are EEPROM's, Electronic Erasable PROM's.

Yeah I can see were you can get addicted to a little change here and a little change there etc... my haveing 2 stock motors helps stay away from that.

So anyway I found a 2732a chip in a old ECM in the garage and erased it at 5 minutes, checked it was blank. Burned it as a 2732a which is 21 volts as opposed to a 2732 which is burbed at 25 volts and viola! Got a good chip! :D

So I may try burning these 2732 chips a a little lower voltage next time.

Most of the bad 2732s I had had previously been burned at the wrong voltage so once they were erased they were done. Come to think of it all the bad ones were surplus that came from ???? but the good ones were take outs from other car computers. That may be the ticket just go down to the pick and pull and grab all the PROMs you can find and leave the mystery surplus chips in the garbage.

Dam that kind of answered my next question.

Where to order some decent chips. I've seen them as low as $1.20 each so if half were bad that would be OK. But I'd rather pay $5. a chip for all good ones...
