28 or 30 spline 10 bolt?

Fellas, I have an '85 half ton pickup with the stock 10 bolt axles. Is there a way I can tell if they have 28 or 30 spline shafts without having to take the shafts out or remove the diff cover and count the splines? Was there a year that they swapped from the 28 to the 30?

i think it was 89 or 90.

Just looked it up on the "Specifiactions" sidebar (never noticed it before). It said they were 28 spline. What a great tool. (Not me).

When they ran out of 28 spline stuff they changed over to 30 spline . Late in 88 , so 88's can be either or , and all 89's have 30 splines .

I prefer 28 splines myself , more years of spares to pick from .
