I am building a very utilitarian k5. It is a 91 Jimmy, I have bought all new alcan springs for it with bilsteins... all stock height because this is not going to be a wheeler. It will see a lot of camping and fire roads but primarily it will be a purpose built truck for heading into the cascades snow boarding. I am planning on running 285/70/r17 Wrangler duratracs on it because they are quite simply the finest snow tire I have ever used and I am thoroughly amazed by their traction in blizzard conditions that I often find myself in.
This is the reason for my question. Currently the truck has a set of KM2 BFGs on it (arguably my favorite offroad tire of all time and what I run on my built CJ7). They are however not what I want out of a tire for the snow. They are the same size as the duratracs but they have an issue, previous owner put them on with near as I can tell the wrong rim for the application. The rims are a simple steel rim (which the new ones will be as well) but they are 9" wide.... with a +12 offset. As a result they sit in too wide and when backing up with the wheel cranked (think backing up out of a parking space) they will hit the steering.
For the Duratracs, I am going to buy new wheels. Planning on the same steel design in an 8" instead and using a +0 offset. This should pull the tire in about an inch from the steering (stock steering by the way, no cross over since this has no lift) and I think the tire should clear from lock to lock which is my goal.
Can anyone confirm my assumptions that with this wheel change I should be in good shape?
