Those that had any idea said that the 292 needs a different motor mount from the 250. But no one can say how it's different. I'm putting a 292 in a '70 K5 Blazer 4x4 that had the 250 originally. Is the cross member a zigzag for the 292 to get the mounts on the engine to line up? Or does it use a straight cross member, but a separate mounting bracket ahead of the cross member on the passenger's side. Needless to say, I'm looking for a used mount. Anybody need a 292? I have a spare crate engine out of a step van. It's nearly complete.

A 250 uses mounts located in a different position than a small block. The 292 uses both. One is in the V8 position, and the other is in the 250 position. Other than that, there should be nothing special about them, IIRC.

I'm looking at doing a 292 conversion to my '86.

BTW, beware about trying to sell or do business in the non-classified areas. The mods don't take too kindly to it. ;)

Edit: another member here, a guy that uses the screen name TARussell has done a 292 conversion. Maybe he'll chime in with the specifics.

And also... Welcome to the site. :thumb:

Thanks for the info, and sorryabout the newbie mistake. I'm still unclear about the V8 mount. I had a 307 in it for several years, and used the same mount as the 250, because the mounts on the engine are parallel. Is a totally separate small bracket bolted to the frame used on the right? Ican only picture 2 options. Either the cross member kind of zigzags so the mounting points line up, or the straight across member is used with another small bracket bolted to the frame. When I put in the 307, the oly thing I had to modify is that the clutch pivot point on the frame had to be moved and turned around.

Not sure on the crossmember... I should've read the original post a little better.

Speaking of 307s... I have a crazy idea of stroking one. Small bore, big stroke. Sort of the 292 concept in a V8. Then I found an article (I believe on hotrod.com) where a guy did it with a 400 crank and made a real stump-puller. Real torquey little beast with not a lot of displacement.

I'm really wanting to mess with a 292. Are you doing any upgrades to yours, like in terms of the intake or head? I'm waiting on a company that's come out with a new Ford "six" head to release their Chevy version (currently in the works). It's an all-aluminum affair, with 12 ports, unlike the siamesed ports of the original. I'm wanting to try MPFI on a 292, possibly with a turbocharger.

Yes, I have worked on the engine. I gave it natural gas pistons, put in larger valves and stronger springs, and a Clifford RV cam. I've got an Offenhauser intake that will eventually probably have a 2 barrel, plus the headers I used on the 250. I didn't do much cutting or grinding. It has the 3 on the tree tranny. I changed the front end years ago to give it disc brakes.

Nice...

Like I said, I'm wanting to do the most "modern" 292 build I can. Unfortunately, I'm not spending a dime until that new head is released. The few good heads out there are used and impossible to find. Sissell's head is out of production (a true 12-port head set up for Weber DCO's right out of the box), although it was a racing head, probably better for a drag setup than a truck. I wish I could find some Chevy 'six' parts from Brazil. They actually had a factory FI setup on their inline-6 motors down there.

Chris,

The 1972 and older stuff has two different positions for the in-line motors and the V-8s to adjust the firewall & fan to radiator clearance but from what I can tell you can use either position with the SBC's . The 1973 and up square body stuff uses the same mount positions regardless of in-line or V-8 ( excluding the 292's & 262's ) .

The 292 does have offset mounts . The passenger side is where the difference is . GM swapped the fuel pump/motor mount position on the 292 ( I believe due to the 4.120" stroke and cam lobe clearance issues ) . If memeory serves me right the mount moved forward .

I don't know for certain but I believe you can use a 1973 and up crossmember on the 1972 on down frame which will allow you to use the 1973 on up motor mounts and frame mounts if needed. On the 1973 and newer stuff the frame mount is the same but the crossmember is zig-zagged in the other direction.

Hope this helps !

Tom
