Those of you that have installed the wide 4x4 version 14 bolt S/F from 88 and later trucks in your 73-87 Blazers. Do you like the wider stance or would you prefer the narrow 4x2 version if you were to do it again.
I have both axles, just not sure which way I want to go. My Rim backspacing is 3 inches so that puts the tires sticking out a little more.
The narrow version adds only 1/2 inch width per side compared to my 12 bolt. Wide version adds 2 inches per side.

Thanks: Just looking for opinions, Mostly street driven 1974 K5.

I like the wider axle on my truck, but I think I have more backspacing than you. I don't know how much lift you have, but my tires would hit the top of the wheel well when flexed if I was any wider.

Agree about the tires hitting the rear wheel well. 35's and 5 inches of lift, right now the rear tires are just inside of the wheel well. Don't do hard core wheel'in.

No one else with an opinion? With all the posts regarding 14bsf's, who,s running the wide version or narrow version sf in your K5's

5" lift 35's 3" backspacing

I don't recall if the one I got came out of a 2WD or a 4WD. Mine came out of a 95 2500 truck. Whats the width difference do you know?

My thread is located here http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=260593

Narrow 14bsf just 64 5/8 wide, wide version 67 7/8 wide. These are 6 luggers. Wide adds 2" per side, narrow adds 1/2" per side verses my 12b
Still not sure which one to use. Wide one has the 4:10 gears I need other is 3:42

I am running one out of a 1995 1 ton G30 van, it is 70" wms to wms and it sits even front to back, I think it looks much better, seems to have hurt the turning radius(i was told this is the reason the track width is offset from the factory). I have not flexed it up a ramp but have had it down in Harlan, KY and to the Badlands and have not had any issues.

EDIT- this is a 2nd gen 14B as well with the ribbed housing and larger pinion support bearing, so that was a small part of the decision

EDIT(again) The comment on clearance is with my old 35's, 4" springs in front/6" in rear, 15x10's with ~3" backspacing, I will try and check this weekend and see how the new 36's clear (they hit more on the front just moving around the driveway so???)

So does anyone know if theirs a particular width that sets them equal with fronts then? did any come with factory rear discs? just more food for thought on your original post of what to look for.

I believe the 1-ton(maybe 3/4t) van axle gives the best match to the front axle (a 3/4t 10Bolt is 69 1/2"), the van axles are 70" and have differant length shafts(the width is not achieved at the hub like a c&c axle or srw), so if you are prone to breaking them carry your own, b/c no one else is likely to have them

As for disk brakes, the only ones I know of are the newer (2000+?) trucks that have disks and a drum style parking brake, you would have to move the perches(a van requires this too so...) but you will likely pay $$$ for a late model axle. I paid $50 for my axle.:D

I think I have the narrower version in my 86. It looks just slightly wider than stock with stock rims and 32 inch tires. I'm very happy with this set up (except with my current gear ratio).

Leaning towards the wider axle (68") + its got the right gears. But stiiiiillll not sure. Good thing I'm not in a hurry.
