Just curious if I was to do a 4wd swap on a 2wd frame, would it be worth going 3 or 4 link from the beginning? Or is it the same or more work than just going to leaf springs (aside from the work involved in linking).

been talking to kert about a winch cradle/b52 mounts/heavy duty shackle hangers to convert my 2wd over, but he said there are quite a few differences in the 2wd frames. Id figure, your gonna start at the same point for a 4 link setup, whether you leaf it or link it, so linking would probably be just as easy. Although, still need to change engine cross member.

Aside from removing all the 2WD cross members and doing a tranny t-case swap a link suspension on a 2WD frame should be no different than a 4WD frame.

only reason i ask is i may be getting a 2wd 77 chevy. just random thoughts i am having about building something :D . im also reading threads on 5.3 and 6.0 conversions :D wait, i dont even have $10 to my name right now :doah: oh well, might as well read up on it for the future.

Just keep in mind that converting a 2WD frame to be used in a 4WD application is labor intensive. You will need to remove all of the cross members, and the engine and transmission will need to be removed to do so. You will need to drill, grind, chisel, hammer and cuss all the rivets out.

I did a conversion a few years back, but I swapped the body onto a rolling 4WD frame. I did the entire job over a weekend and about 3 week nights after work. Very simple to do if you ask me. You only need to have the means of lifting the cab off the old frame and lowering it back onto the new frame.

I will most likely go the 4wd frame route then. Im pretty sure my blazer frame is fubrd so i wont be able to use it in the long run.

i just converted my 2 wd crewcab to 4x4, wasnt that bad really. i had to pull the engine and trans anyways since they were tired and the trans slipped. i used donor parts from a 4x4 k5 to the spring mounts and engine crossmember which needed a little modification to make work, but wasnt anything to serious. worst part was drilling all the dam holes to bolt the stuff on lol

The only crossmember that has to go is the engine crossmember and that unbolts with the front suspension
