so i snagged a 2wd ps pump because I'm installing crossover and i dont see any difference? what exactly is the difference? maybe i already had a 2wd ps pump and i just bought another one? i will post pics if you need them.

You need a 2wd steering box for crossover, not a 2wd pump. Pumps are the same, steering boxes/gears are different.

You can tell the difference by the pitman shaft. The 2wd boxes use a splined shaft with four master splines and a nut to hold the pitman arm on while a 4wd box uses a pitman arm with a pinch bolt through the end of it (side to side).

but why cant you run crossover with a 4wd box? your right i do notice that the 2wd one has a nut and the other doesnt but what does that matter?

the two wheel box having 4 master splines allows you to index the pitman arm at 12 - 3-6- or 9 oclock while the 4wd box you can only index at 12 or 6. basicly a 4wd box will only push /pull front to back not side to side.

Slight highjack, if you are going to eventually go crossover, and want/need to rebuild a box, could you get a 2wd box, drop pitman arm, and index for push pull? I like killing two birds with one stone whnever possible.

Thanks in advance

I dont know the year breaks, but I think its in 81 that GM switched to o ring fittings on the hoses. Somone with more knowledge will chime in. I think you can swap from one to another with a hose and the fitting on rear of appropriate pump.

Mid 1980 is when GM changed from flare fittings to O-ring fittings. Basically there is a 1st design box in 1980 (flare fitting) and a 2nd design box in 1980 (O-ring fitting). You can swap out the rear fitting in the P/S pump for which ever style you need.

now both are from a mid 80s so im think its all o-rings. before it was all from a 73

Dude, look at your post count and hurry up and make another post, something just bothers me about seeing 666.

thats so wierd you said that becuause i was thinking the same thing!! i had to PAD another one

It's alot easier to just swap the sector shafts. That way you dont have to swap the whole box. Unless your tapping your steering box for hydro assist then you don't have a choice.
