3.07 gears???

My theory is that the Fed may have required a minimum fuel economy or the manufacturer just wanted to falsify it for the window sticker so they put a real tall gear in one, got it on a flat stretch of highway with a tailwind and done their testing.
In reality the trucks would’ve gotten much better fuel economy with 4.56 gears because most driving is local.
My truck lugged itself to death trying to drive 60 in OD with 3.73s.

I remember reading something along the lines of that many years ago. Using tall gears to try and cheat some mileage out of them seemed to be their answer.

moronic sales staff that rarely understands the diesel emissions stuff and how to use it

I think you gave auto sales staff way too much credit there.

Way back in my late teens I broke my hand and needed work that didn't involve a framing hammer. I cut my cast off and applied to every place on auto row.

First sale for a Saturday. Bump of coke with the manager. Right. Mid-afternoon any given day, drunk as ****. Vehicle specs, yeah, that is for geeks. I remember one of the guys, he was like, Forest understands how an engine works...

Try that on for size.

Edit: It was also a thing with everyone that I hadn't been to jail yet.

I'll say this, my sales guys probably aren't taking bumps of coke. 3 out of 4 of them are typical used car sales though. They just lack the ability to learn or understand the new product. The one guy that does is the owner's son. Funny how he outsells the other 3 idiots combined month after month after month.

I used to think the same and I drive a semi, most used to be 3.55-4.10
Now they run 2.23 :yikes:
And they pull 80k lbs and can easily go 80mph on highway and pull up the hills 40mph.
My 3.55 geared 2012 runs 30mph up the hills and struggles with 80mph on flat.
Newer engines have more power but also have it at lower rpms.
Mine dies below 1200rpm the newer engines are still pulling at 1000rpm.
We can go on with this debate but the point is that absolute numbers are not necessary, combos define a successful truck
Touche touche. I think boost vs NA and gas vs diesel also has a big effect on what is optimal for the final drive, but 2.23 is a lot lower than i would have guessed they went.

One truck I had was 305, 700r4, 31s factory and 2.73 gears. I think it would idle doing 70. It was a turd with a 350 in it.
