I read they're the same caliper, the years matter, SAE or Metric banjo bolts/bleeders.

Don't know what year these axles are from, but the bleeders and banjo bolts are metric (thankfully, I already bought the 10mmx1.0 speed bleeders, and they fit). The piston measured 2 13/16, but I see on rock auto they sell the 2 15/16, I measured just the metal, I'm assuming the other 1/8" was the rubber boot.

Just want to make sure I'm buying the correct calipers, I might call around to see if anyone has them locally for the core return, if not on hand, then I'll just order through rock auto or some place.

A-1 CARDONE Part # 184209 and of course the other side. (one of the ones I found on rock auto)

But as I'm getting part #s collected to call around town (advance, autozone, oreilly, whomever MIGHT have it on hand), the same search pops up 3 5/32 piston size, and the 2 15/16 as the "exact fit". Brake codes JB6 and JB7 which means nothing to me, other than 6 is for 2 15/16, and 7 is for 3 5/32. That's advance.

Autozone's duralast reman has the 2 15/16, but the banjo bolt size says 10mmx1.5 when for S&Gs I screwed my 10mmx1.0 speed bleeders in my banjo bolt holes and it fit just fine. Or well, seemed to, it has the red thread locker on there, so I only did it finger snug.

And then I check oreillys, and their brake best house brand shows 1.5 for the banjo bolt and bleeder, still a 2 15/16 piston, but with JD5 code. Well, one of them, they have like 20 calipers on there. But they do sell the a1 cardones, so at least I can use that same part number from rock auto, if they have them on hand.

So I guess whoever has any of the 2 15/16 piston size on hand, just bring one of my banjo bolts and make sure it fits? I don't have a thread pitch gauge, so I can't measure it, I know the bleeders are 10mmx1.0 cause I have the package. I dunno, I suck at buying parts :)

And I was going to ask the difference between loaded/unloaded calipers... but then I searched and it said with or without pads included :D

EDIT: well... I relooked at my speed bleeder package, it says 1.5

When I swapped to 3/4s I unbolted my stock 1/2 ton calipers and hung them from the frame via bungees. Swapped the axle out and then bolted them to the 3/4 axle.

I believe the caliper body is the same between 1/2 and 3/4 ton, just the piston diameter (JL8 option code for larger pistons IIRC). So, I would think you can use either one as long as they are both the same. You don't want to have different piston diameters on each side cause you'll have different clamping force.

Short answer: Yep, 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton 4WD calipers are interchangeable.

Long answer:

1/2 and 3/4 ton calipers, D44 and 10 bolt, all use the same physical size calipers. They're the "GM Large" size and use D52 pads.

73-77 use the SAE banjo bolts and bleeders. 78-up use the metric.

The 3/4 ton's have larger pistons than the 1/2 ton. I happen to have a selection available to me. Measuring the piston inside and out says the 2 15/16" has an ID of right about 2 1/2" and the 3 5/32" of 2 5/8".

For reference, the Caddy Eldo calipers has an OD of 60 or 61mm, btw, which is 2.4". I don't have a set of 1/2 tons handy to measure.

If the metric banjo bolt fits, that's the only caliper that will work.
There were 3 variations in the calipers. 2 have a subtle difference in the casting that prevents using the wrong one, and the third has the metric banjo bolt.

I had to find all this out the hard way after Oreillys sold me the wrong ones twice, and I had to go thru every part number, year by year until I found the third variation with the metric banjo.

Yes loaded just means they come with pads.

To save cash on parts I can wait on, I go to partstrain.com or rockauto.com to obtain part numbers then search only the part number only on EBay. Typically I pay about 50% of Oreillys prices, and get the parts delivered to my front door.

Good luck.

Much to my surprise, advance got them for me, at first they said they had them on hand, brought them out, and they looked different, so I glanced at the screen, he got ones from a C20, or so it said on the computer. So I had to order some, but they came in in a few hours. They're red now, sitting on stumps waiting to dry to coat the other side tomorrow :D Now I don't have to worry about core charges buying them online.

Good to know all the info posted.
