looking for 3/4 ton backing plates from either a FF or SF as long as their both 13" drum shoe size. The years to look for are '83 on up backing plates. Anybody done disc swap lately?

I'm sitting here in the house and can't remember right off the bat with the plates on the '82 and older using the bolt on style equal length cables that if you can drill round holes on the opposite sides of the plates and flip them to the opposite side on the axle.

In other words swap the plates from drivers to passenger side and vice versa. There should be a raised boss where the cable goes thru and on the other side of the plate there should be a raised boss without a hole. If there are, just drill round holes to accept the press in type cables you need.

But like I said, I'm indoors right now and can't remember if there are bosses on the plates without holes on the older style plates. The newer '83 on up have the raised bosses so drilling on those is no problem.

maybe you will get some more to find out as I have axle sitting in garage right now on 2 rollers with free jack stands but listening to you on this one and open for ideas.

Always try it and if doesn't work bring out welder and weld holes up and redrill to my needs right?

I looked on a rear I have here in the shop with the equal length bolt in style cables and there are no bosses for provisions to drill new holes for the newer type cables. You will need to replace the backing plates for the correct type.

Used 73-82 and NOS 83-...
Corrected the years.

And the used ones won't work since theres no boss for drilling holes.

Look on the NOS ones and you'll see the boss without holes. Either way these are the plates needed to run the unequal length cables.

The years were correct and I will expand on that

Get that info from books?

I will do better and vouch for my opinion of 30 years of hands-on inspections and dismantling of trucks and will stand by '82 and older being bolt-on and '83 and newer being press-in.

Only way to verify is take a poll and see what others trucks have. These cables go for 1/2 and 1 tons also.

Not going to try and argue with you but we can just believe what each other wants to believe.

Lets just focus at getting the customer happy with the correct parts they need. Pictures are the absolute way to confirm a sale or not.

So where saying the 2nd pic is what is needed here to make me get moving on this swap?

Are your parking brake cables equal length or is the passenger side longer stretching over to the driver side to hook up with the driver side cable?

You didn't read my post....

I have two original 1983 trucks, both have bolt in ebrake cables. I own them now and have for decades. No poll required. Images, titles, VINS won't be good enough for you?

I have been doing this for OVER 30 years AND have all the factory GM parts books from 1946 to 1989.
