ok so i have heard that pre 80' 3/4 tons will bolt in to a k5. and what would a 14 bolt/44 combo out of a 76 k20 with a 350 and auto most likely have for gears?

thanks,
cody

3/4 from any year of a square will bolt in. 73-87

More than likely the gears will be 4.10s

ok awesome and how do you think they would do on the freeway with the 4:10, my k5 has 350/350 combo and i would be running 35-37's?

I've actually found quite a few 14bff in the junk yards with 3.73 gears, it's what i originally had when i got mine, had to keep searching several before i found one with 4.10, but never went back and got it, ended up buying gears online.

running 37" tires might be pretty good on the freeway, i know when i run mine down to 3rd gear, with my 35"s it has the motor rev'd up alittle higher than i like, but it could be because i'm used to hearing it below the 2000 line while in OD.

Don't be so sure that they are 4.10s... I've seen MANY different gear sets in the late 70's trucks.

I have a '78 chevy K20 sitting out back that either has 3.08s or 2.76s. Not saying that came stock, but they're in there one way or another...

The front axle should be a D44, and if you're lucky, the factory gear tag will still be attached to one of the diff cover bolts!

Will work good as long as you don't want to run much past 70. I've got a 400/350 with 4.10's and 37's. Has good low end, and cruises nice on the highway 62-65mph

Highest gear ratio I've seen for the 14FF is a 3.22 or 3.24 ration.

Should have seen the ring and pinion. They had lots of teeth on them. Just not something you see very often on a 14FF.

hmmmm... well they guy selling the set is going to check for a tag on the diffs tomarrow, they look stock so i guess i will see:dunno:

I on the other hand have only seen a couple 14b FF with 3.73s in them. I have seen alot of semifloat 14 bolts with 3.73s in them.

When I swapped 14b it had 3.73 with a gov loc that had so few teeth that I thought it had an open carrier. I went with H2 wheels off craigslist because they were cheap, light, and plentiful and put a used set of 37" bfg AT. It's a good commuter friendly combo in 37" for those who have to justify the $ to the spousal unit.

Ok so a havent pulled the covers yet, but i did the spin the tire two times and count the pinion revolutions and it came out to a little over four and a half turns, does thins mean they are more than likley 4:56's?

Possible. But the most positive way is to remove the cover of course. Don't buy them unless you pull the covers first.

The '77 K20 Burb I bought for my D44/14BFF axle combo had 4.10's. But then it also came from the factory with the weight distibution hitch and trailer wiring package according to the build sticker that was still in the glove box.

pulled the covers this morning, they have a great looking set of 4:10 gears:waytogo:.
Awesome! Always good to see 4.10's over any other higher gears. :thumb:

Lately with the purchases of 3/4 ton axles I've been buying for the past 2 years or so, I've been having bad luck with gear ratios. Honestly, they've all got 3.73's. Not anything higher or lower, just flat out 3.73's. And this is about 4 rearends sitting in the shop right now and 1 front 10 bolt. The others I was able to sell for cheap as they were under truck frame/bed trailers.

I'm still itching to find a set of 4.10's someday and hopefully soon.
