So I’m wanting to start looking for a set to build up so in a few years when I do a LS swap I can have some beefy built axles with lockers and all that. I found a rear 14 bolt on Craigslist out of a 99 cargo van for a good price, would that fit an 89 k5? Or do I need to be closer to my year model? Still pretty new at all this stuff.

Spring perches will be wrong but watch out with van axles, they are usually wide to allow more room between the wheel wells. My favorite 14 bolt is the AAM 10.5 out of the early 2000's trucks. Get one from a work truck with the 6.0, not the Duramax. You get the nice late model ribbed casting with factory disc brakes and ebrake inside the rotor. I have one in my K5, its great. You will need to move the perches. Mine also had the big 1410 yoke which is super beefy and you can get them with 4.10 gears factory. Detroit locker drops right in for about $450.

Don't forget that to have the Detroit drop in, it has to be an open carrier, NOT a G80.

The only ones that bolt in to your K5 are the axles out of 3/4 ton trucks from '73 to '87. The one ton truck of that era have narrower spring pad width. But if you want the extra width AND disc brakes, I would look for one out of a 2001 and newer van. But you may not want or need the extra width, and possibly not want the rear disc, or the extra work and parts changes that rear disc needs.

The extra width in the rear axle can make the track closer to the same as the front axle. It can be helpful in some situations, but you loose a little bit of turning radius. I don't really know how much you loose, or if you would notice.

I have a g-van axle out at the shop, I will try to remember to measure WMS width.

Hmm lots of info lots of stuff I need to look up lol. Like I said I’m pretty much a total noob learning as I go on how to work on my truck. I was under the impression it would be a direct bolt on but seems like I need to do a little more research. I found this today if y’all wouldn’t mind letting me know if it’s what I need to start? https://austin.craigslist.org/pts/d/pflugerville-84-chevy-14-bolt-semi/6973661901.html

That is a semi floating axle. It is fine for a lot of wheeling and it will bolt in. It isn't as stout as a full floater 14 where the axle does not carry the weight of the vehicle. And the full float axle has a slightly larger ring gear. The semi floating axle was more common beginning in the early eighties.

Would you recommend I just go with a full floater? I’m not doing any super extreme off-roading but my brother and me do wanna do the rubicon together in a few years once I have time to build my truck up nice and stout.

Yes, that ff. Price seems a little high. I would think $500 or so for a running set of 3/4 ton axles.

Looks like the pads are already removed. That's a 1 ton rear I think. The 3/4 ton and 1 ton ff's that I have have the shock mounts on opposite sides of the axle.

And my 1 ton has wider brake hubs. That one matches my 1 ton axle.

Maybe there were variants though :dunno:
