I can score a 74 3/4 ton lngbed for a "benji" and I dont want to swap the 3/4 ton dana 44 to only run 8 lug outers. Is there any more strenght in the 3/4 44?

Nope. All other things being equal (i.e. comparing similar year D44's) the only difference is the outers. From the knuckles in they're identical.

not as far as I know... save for the wheel/axle connection strength. 2 more lug nuts! ;)

well that sucks I want to lock up the front end but not with the 38.5 boggers I am runing. oh and I only got 5 lugs on one side:D

the advantage to swapping the entire axle is that the gears will match the 14 bolt you are hopefully getting with the truck. if you can buy a 3/4 ton 4wd truck for $100 don't think about it. go buy it. you can part it out for a profit.

Some model D44's use different diameter ,and thickness, tubes but most folks don't ever get into wanting one for the other. I just thought I would mention it just incase you ran into this problem gathering u-bolts or steerring stabilizer brackets. Your 1974 housing "should" be the smaller tube but thicker than later model housing that used a larger diameter tube but a much thinner one.

As for the Spicer hubs - the pre 1976-7 big hub Spicers are great hubs but they are no stronger than the internal style that replaced them. Infact most folks have a problem with an external style hub mount by the retaining bolts loosing torque after usage and time ( Loctite is the best method to avoid this common problem ). The internal Spicer hubs that replaced the external units are every bit as strong and are more user friendly; ( although they do not look as stout) the internals are considered the stoutest style hubs made - Spicer hubs that is .
