3/4-ton running gear for 76 K5 Blazer

Thanks for all the feedback. I should have the funds to purchase the 1-ton set with 4.10 gears soon so will plan on doing that. I like the advice to see how well the 4.10 works and then regear later if necessary. The 4.10 with 35s I've been running for years hasn't ever been an issue but I've never really done too much serious crawling with it. Guessing I won't do a ton of if in the future either but I'd sure love to! Anyway, this gives me a direction and a place to start. Stay tuned.

Is getting a late-model rear axle, e.g. 2003 2500, a bad idea compared to getting a 14-bolt ff from a mid-seventies 1-ton. Bad idea meaning more expensive option, more work required to make it work, etc. I'm still planning on the D60 front but have an opportunity to buy a 2003 rear. Thanks

My opinion is that a 2003 AAM 10.5 is a superior axle due to it having disc brakes with integrated parking brake from the factory. I have an '02 in my K5. Its slightly wider and the spring perches need moved for a squarebody. Make sure its out of a gas truck, a diesel of the same year is probably an AAM 11.5 which does not share parts with a 14 bolt. That should only cost a few hundred bucks, mine was $250. Of course after a rebuild and locker add another grand.

I ran a 02 aam 10.5 in my last 2 trucks. They are a nice option due to the brakes. If you can weld it's an easy swap, lots of grinding tho.
My detroit from my 14ff swapped right in, so that is nice

@HankScorpio so $500 sounds a bit high? I'll see if I can get it for less.

@sweetk30 not sure what you're recommending; the link just takes me to the home page. What should I look for?

Thanks!

Pricing depends on a lot of things. They were in lots of trucks but if there is one already out and ready to go in good shape $500 may be reasonable. Especially if it's the gear ratio you want. I did pull mine for that price but with a grinder it didn't really take very long.

I bought the rear for $500. First purchase towards the build so I'm pretty excited. Now just to save up the funds for the D60 and I'll be able to get to work.

I did new brakes with new calipers on mine. The bearings were fine so just new seals on the hubs. New Ruffstuff diff cover, a lubelocker gasket and a Detroit for the diff. You can order the brakes from rockauto for half the price of the local parts stores if yours are worn out.

I will take a close look at the calipers and either rebuild them or buy new. The rotors are pretty rusty so will plan on getting new ones. Only 112,000 miles on the rear end so hoping bearings are in good shape but will check those out as well. I popped the cover off and it was full of gear oil and looked really nice.

I think the condition of the D60 I buy will determine whether or not I run with the 4.10 gears for a while or not. If I have to go completely through the D60 I may elect to do new gears at the same time in which case I'll do the gears and locker in 14 too.
