so im sure this has been covered more than once on here but i cant seem to find it.
i was given a 1-ton rear axle out of either a 81 or 82 silverado and im trying to swap it with my 3/4 ton and i want to make a list of everything i need to do the swap or is it pointless to do the swap?

Probably pointless. What rear axle do you currently have? If it's a full float 14 bolt axle, then there's no real reason to swap over. Is the new one ton axle a Dana 70? That'd be the only upgrade, kind of. You'd have to move your spring pad mounts, need new u-bolts.

If you have a semi-float 14 bolt, it might be worth upgrading. Depends on the use of the truck.

hmmm well i currently have a 12 bolt stock, i have know idea about the 1-ton, its currently at a friends shop and ive been too busy to work on it. but i sort of want the 1-ton just for the sake of having one hahah. i use the truck for mud bogging and for trails driving

I'm surprised you have a 12 bolt in the rear of a 3/4 ton truck. What year is it?

its a 79, the rear end blew out before and was "fixed" by a shop but the gears dont match my front:doah:

Is your current axle 6 lug or 8 lug? A 12 bolt was NEVER made in an 8 lug variety.

Is the current rear-end 6 or 8 lug? If it's a 12 bolt, it should be 6 lug and not matching the front which should be 8 lug.

The 1 ton will be an improvement in strength, just have to change the spring pads and one lower shock mount. And do the gears match?

If not, you might free a nearly free 3/4 ton 14 bolt rearend with the correct gears, by looking around.

I see. Do you have 8 lug wheels up front and 6 in back, currently?

So, presuming the rear end you got is actually a one ton, you'll have to move your spring pads in, as your 3/4 ton frame is narrower than a 1-ton frame. 14 bolt full float axles were in the 3/4 ton trucks, so if your one ton rear end came out of a 3/4 ton, you'll not need to do that. Also, you'll need a proper u-joint for the new yoke.

Edit: WOW! All three of us saying the same thing at the same time. :haha:

Actually, it's the opposite, the 3/4 ton has a 42.5" pad spacing and the 1 ton is 40.5" pad spacing. The shock mounts on a 1 ton are BOTH in the wrong spot also.

Believe it's 6 in the and 8 in the front, it's been a busy week so I haven't had time to go near the k5. So basically what I'm hearing is all I get is a stronger axle and do more than a simple swap? If so then what are they worth value wise, depending on the gears?
