Getting ready to do some axle work.. damn, I still need to check current gear ratio but as I said before, pretty sure its 3.08.

Looking to *possibly* swap in 3.73 axles, possibly go 32" tire this summer...

Looking for feedback of someone that has, or is currently running this combo with 6.2l (Ive got 700R4 BTW).

Thanks much,
Andrew

MIn e has 3.73's w/33 and it's fine..plenty of power. Mine has a 350 and 4 speed but your 700r4 has a better 1st then the 2nd gear I use

Notice you're in the diesel forum. Different torque curves than a small block with a SM465.

That said, you should be fine. Mine came with a 6.2L, 700R4, NP241, 3.73's, and 29" tall tires bone stock. Must have been slow as hell but would have towed anything a K5 could tow just fine.

I got it with worn 31's and it drove pretty good.

Next I put some tall 32's on 16" wheels and regretted not going to 33's as I noticed NO difference in power between them and the smallish 31's.

This spring I put 33's on the 16" wheels and it's still good. You can tell it's slower to get up to speed but honestly I always felt like it was low geared before. Won't win any races but it drives just fine for a 20+ year old K5 with it's original engine.

Which pertains to his question about a diesel powered truck with a different transmission how?

No offense but I don't post in threads about big blocks due to me not having one.

I have a diesel too. What's the big deal? Everyone must have had a ****ty weekend cause ya'll are on the rag or something

Well, no where in your thread do you even reference that. You only reference your small block powered SM465 truck, which is immaterial to the question.

Not on the rag, just annoyed by inane and confusing posts.

I have your setup BUT with 342 gears from factory and heavy BFG 32's and it was hunting back and forth from OD to third so I was buying the "too tall gear theory" as others state BUT I went to my tranny guy (that's transmission expert that had rebuilt it, not a sex change weirdo) and he did some things to it, and it is like it was in 1986.
I mean think about it they didn't hunt back and forth all over the place when driven off the showroom floor with that gear on 30's even when we tossed on 33's the next week.:waytogo:

Ive got that combo with 700r4 and a 408 sbc, it works fine, had no problem in the sand dunes, but i want 4.10s and 32s, now thats naughty:D

Whatever he did to the transmission still won't fix the axles being rather high geared for the tires the truck wears.

Mr Transmission can't change physics.

It wont change the gearing and will still have the slight bogging/lag of the high gears, but there are things they can do to prevent the hunting. My tranny guy has talked of a solenoid or relay that he can put in mine that is a little less sensitive and will keep it in lock up. Plus prevent the OD-3 hunt. Wont help the underpowered at that gear fact though:doah: thats why I'm searching for 4.11's.

88 burb/350tb1/700r4/208/3.73's/33's--- I know, not a diesel:D But I wish:thumb:

If I remember correctly the 700r4 would downshift from OD to 3rd at around 75% throttle input in stock configuration. With high gears you would start applying more throttle than that to maintain speed on grades and thus downshift, let off on the throttle and upshift, etc... You could modify the trans to prevent the kickdown to 3rd just by throttle input. I used to go to midget sprint car races with a guy who towed with a Suburban that had a built 350 and the 700r4 modified this way. He would have to manually move the shifter to downshift on grade on the highway.

I forget the name of that thing but I know you used to be able to get it from Summit. Think B&M made them. Wasn't terribly expensive either.

mine hunts with almost no throttle on flat ground. Not alot but it does it:confused:
