This is my dual exhaust that I built last fall for my big block.

I used Hooker Super Competition Headers part# 2817hkr.

I wish I would have used part# 2817-1hkr because they are ceramic coated.

I used ARP 1" long chromemoly header bolts.

Summit Racing header to pipe reducers.

Flowmaster U-Fit dual exhaust pipe kit.

Dynomax super turbo mufflers.

I used the gaskets that came with the headers. They have worked good so far, but it only has about 200miles on it so far.

I had to rebend the support rod that goes between the bellhousing and the transfer case.

In the second pic you can see where I had to cut the pipe and welded it in two places to bend it enough to get over the transfer case.

More pics.

In the first 3 pics you can see how I made the front hangers for the mufflers. I got some rubber muffler isolators from Napa.
I built a hook out of 1/2" round rod and welded that to a plate that I bolted to the exhaust clamps. The end of the hook goes through the bottom of the rubber. The top of the rubber has a piece of 1/2" tube through it as a spacer then there is a bolt that goes through the crossmember.

All of the joints that have exhaust clamps on them have been tack welded. I may go back and weld them up if I have a problem with leaks or it moving.

More.

The first two pics are where it goes over the tcase and the tcase crossmember.

The last two pics are of the turn downs out of the mufflers. These are what I will be running on the street. For the mud I am going to run some mini stacks. They will go up through the bed about a foot. From the side of the truck you won't be able to see them, just the exhaust coming from them.

I am going to make some 3 bolt header flanges. I will weld one on the rear of the mufflers, one on the mini stacks, and one on the turn downs. That way all I will have to do is unbolt the mini stacks and bolt on the turn downs or vice versa.

This is a pic of the rear hanger on the muffler. I used a piece of angle iron for a crossmember to hold the rear of the mufflers.

If I didn't have the body lift I don't think I would be able to run the pipe that high over the transfer case or the crossover tube that high.

looks badass man, i love the look from the rear. looking at the prices, looks like you probably coulda taken it to a shop and have them custom bend everything for you for cheaper, but your setup looks very nice.

Muddy, I probably could have but no one around here mandrel bends exhaust tubing. They all kink it. I have alot of tubing left over. I could build another exhaust with it.

tRusty, I think it sounds real well. I hope to have a video of it soon.

wana get rid of it?;) i need to redo my exhaust too

Muddy,
No I can't. I never know what I will be building next. If I got rid of it today, I would need it next week.

yea i hear ya, thats how it always happens haha. looks great tho, definitely give me ideas for what i should do with mine

So what do you guys think? Do I need any more hangers?

Hedman says to hang the mufflers. Then put a hanger close to the end of the header, so the exhaust holds itself into place. That way the header doesn't crack.

Hooker doesn't say to put a hanger close to the end of the header. I am using Hooker headers.

I was thinking about putting one close to the end of the header, on the exhaust, but should I hang it off the rear of the engine or the frame? If I hang it off the engine every time the engine moves in the frame the front of the exhaust will go with it and there will not be any stress on the header. If I hang it off the frame and the engine moves in the frame it will stress the header.

Where would you guys install more hangers?
What have you guys done that worked good?

Thanks,
Mike

Off the top of my head, the dual diesel exhaust setup GM used, only had three hangars.

One forward of the muffler, I believe a bit behind the front seats. One on the back of the muffler, and one near the tip. All are rubber isolated.

Unless the engine doesn't move, it would seem to me that you'd want plenty of space between the engine and the first mount, or you end up stressing that mount.
