Who did you check with? There's a video of a guy swapping the gears side to side, but what does making the gear push in the opposite direction make any difference? The stories of "bias ratio" make you think the gears are cut at a different angle between a front and a rear.

First I've heard about having to flip the gears. I have no idea...
I check with the Eaton for specs on whether they work in the front or not.

Given that the carrier is correct they will go in front or rear applications but will be most effective in one direction over the other due to the gear cut and orientation.
Most folks would prefer the front axle to do most of its magic with a forward movement hence the difference in designations as front application or rear.
Kind of like a Gov-Loc never being offered in a front end application - the flyweight doesn’t get the same momentum going in reverse as designed and won’t engage in that rotation of direction.

This may not be a direct comparison but it’s the easiest one in my head to compare at the moment.
The cut and placement of the gears work in favor of one powered induced direction over the other is very similar to why the worm gear on a winch has a natural anti-reversal effect once the power is no longer applied but a winch that is set up with spur gears must have an external brake mechanism because the gear set offers no natural resistance in the opposite direction.
The cut and placement of the T/T gears offer resistance of varying degrees depending on the type of cut and orientation and creates the bias ratio with the higher numerical number being more effective for traction.
The manufactures seem to limit the higher ratios for front end applications but that’s most likely to keep the majority of the public from complaining - most folks here would not likely complain of better traction from a front diff.

Yes, the amount of traction varies on the cut of the gears and other factors, but it's not going to be zero in the opposite direction. You're just shoving the gears in a different direction inside the case. I would love to know some numbers for comparison, but there's a lot of math I'd have to look up and make some broad assumptions.

The true track has a little wizard inside that just controls it. It works equally in forward and reverse.
What good is a traction device if it only works good in the forward direction? Your ass is stuck and you need to back out? Sorry sucka!
