305 vortech question

Quick question guys. My buddy has a 305 vortech out of a 96 1500. He wants to build it up and we don't know what a 305 block is capable of. I've played around in Desktop Dyno (with my limited knowledge) and we can get some nice numbers. The biggie question is what is the block capable of? He's got a 400 but it's about a 24 hour roundtrip away plus it needs rebuilt. Is it worth trying to build the 305 or just suck it up and go get the 400?

He wants a street machine, this isnt a 4wd truck.

Well , a 305 isn't desirable by most , but in some cases being different is cool . 400 crank ( needs to be aftermarket with the vortec block ) and .030 over is a 334

when you say street machine, are you referring to a cruiser or a car with actual performance potential?

the 305's 3.735" bore doesnt allow it to make any kind of real power. it shrouds even the 1.84" intake valves common with these engines, much less a valve that actually flows enough to make decent power numbers. you're much better off starting with a large bore engine for anything you're looking to put money in. the 335 stroker mentioned above, while "different", is just a spendy turd.

what kind of vehicle is it going in? if its something light, i might go for the 400 block, with a 307/327 crank in it. add a set of 6.25" rods ( http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+4294925232+4294838997+4294867688+4294908395+115+4294786504http://store.summitracing.com/egnse...94867688+4294908216+4294908395+115+4294786510 )and a set of pistons designed for a 6.0" rod 400 (w/ factory 3.75" stroke, 1.25" pin height http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+4294925232+4294839001+4294891096+4294908395+4294791059+4294791064+115). this should give you a high revving 347-358ci small block, that'll breathe like nobody's business.

BTW, Vortech doenst make engines, they make superchargers. GM does use Vortec engines though.

I knew I could count on the spelling nazis to correct me...

This is for his 2wd 96 K1500. Street machine to him means something he can run down the strip and still drive around. We were leaning towards the 400 but was curious what the 305 was capable of. I told to him trade the 400 for a 350 and go from there. Parts galore for a 350 while 305 and 400 stuff will be more spendy/hard to find.

I think beater's suggestion sounds pretty cool. I'm going to look into that.

for a C1500? if you're planning on putting that in a C1500, you better gut the hell out of it, run fiberglass EVERYTHING, and dont be surprised when you cant get it into the 13s.

Well you can get 400 horsepower out of it , for a price . 13 seconds is doable ............in a Camaro

I wouldn't even consider a truck for a strip car without adding some weight to the rear and shaving it elswhere . Pickups with high horsies and empty bed just spin the tires unless you address it with weight and supsension tweaks .
