Is there a way to visually compare a 305 and a 350 if there is no tag?

I was told one time, the temp sensor on the driver side head was the only way. That the 305 had a small 3/8 NPT, and the 350 had a large 1/2 NPT.

Yeah, I was leaning more towards you are looking at a truck to buy and didn't have the codes or tags. I was curious if what I said was factual. I seen a difference on the late 80's trucks but I was unsure if it applied throughout the years.

My buddy ran into the issue where he was told an engine was a 350, bored to a 355. After getting some parts turned out being a 305 or 307, can't remember which.

dont care what anyone says but casting #'s dont realy lay to ya.

run the #'s or pay the price later.

seen a guy get a 350 and then ran the #'s and found out a 265ish late 70's emissions motor . :haha:

I do believe that at some point either the head or block got stamped 5.0/5.7. I'm pretty sure it wasnt til late 80s though.

86 and newer as far as i have seen are marked 5.0 or 5.7 on the drivers side above the bellhousing. but it's hard to see with the engine installed

only way to be sure is to run the numbers, which can be a pain to see sometimes.

A friends brother bought a truck with a "fresh 383 stroker" well less than 24 hours after he bought it its knockin like a mofo, they pull it apart and it was just a standard old 350 crank in there still.

Well now you got me thinking, mines got the small temp sender.I`ll check the numbers and report back. Maybe thats why the power on my truck sucks so bad! LOL

A quick check is the timming marker on the timming cover.350 is off to the side and 305 is almost at the top of the balancer. The balancers are marked differant also because the timming mark location.

what year it is and what emmission package it has will change the timing location. not just engine size. my 350 timing mark is seen threw the gap behind the water pump.

run the numbers is the way to go

I'd look up the numbers too, either the casting # on the bellhousing area or the one under the passenger side head on the block pad..we sold too many sbc engines at the junkyard that turned out NOT to be 350's to go by "external" differences..using head casting numbers can be risky too, since heads get swapped all the time and all small block heads are pretty much interchangeable..(we even had a few engines that had smaller valves on one head than the other!--evidently someone cracked a head and tossed any old chevy head back on it!:doah:)...sometimes taking the heads off and measuring the bore and stroke is the best way to determine CID,as some years used the same codes on small blocks other than 350's ,adding to the confusion...

I took a look at my block casting numbers today, but I can`t find them in my book? the numbers I could see are 4094766, there maybe a 4 in front of that number. Hard to tell, standing on my head! The book I got is how to rebuild your small-block chevy. It dos`nt list those numbers. Any ideas on what I got? It`s got the small temp sender, and the timming mark is at the top center. I guess I could pull a valve cover and see what the heads are. I think I got a 305? Any help would be cool!

That is most likely 1409766.

Look near the bottom of the page here.

Thanks for that! I saved that site for my favorites. 305 it is:(,ohwell at least it runs, kind of. BTW i grew up in B.C. Abbotsford, been living in Alberta for 11 years. Hows that hot dry weather going for you!

I work in Abbotsford 2 days a week. I was out there at o'dark thirty this morning to meet my boss, I didn't want to be there any later because tey have the Airshow on this weekend. Where abouts is Clive?

No complaints with the weather, at least summer finally arrived. ;)

Clive is about 1/2 hour north east of Reddeer. My old boss lives on the hill above the airport on Ross rd, we allways had a great veiw of the show from there.
