31 gal k5 1978 gas tank lock ring

I'm trying to remove the lock ring on my 31 gal tank. It has three tabs. Do I move it clockwise or counter clockwise to remove? I've read both clockwise and counterclock wise.

counter clockwise, just like a regular nut.

Do I need to bend the 3 prongs? I keep hitting it but it's not moving. I'm going to tey an get a wrench fit for it.
