31's, 33's, 0r 35's....

Re: 31\'s, 33\'s, 0r 35\'s....

yes very fast if you wheel and you increase the chance of breakage by 10 fold. i wheeled with 1/2 ton adn 35's, heck i even jumped it, the axles held up fine. But i didnt wheel too hard or that long before i went 1 ton

Re: 31\'s, 33\'s, 0r 35\'s....

I was in your position last spring, I opted for 31/10.5s, I think im going to lift my truck 2-3 inchs and throw 33/12.50s on. Definatly for the wheeling I do back home. But for the trip to college I like the 31s, I still have plently of power for the drive up, inless Im running into the wind, then OD is worthless...(damn 4x8 sheet of plywood aerodynamics) But theres not awhole lot of wheeling for me near college so 31s are fine.

If i were you I would think about how much wheeling you are going to do, and the tire size that would be best for that wheeling. Then make your decision from there.

Think 33's and a 4" lift. Can get away with without regearing or swapping axles. Seen lots of trucks on 33's with 4" lift and looks good. When you're ready to go bigger, just trim the fenders. /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

Sounds like 33's might be the best of both worlds. Less breakage but yet bigger tires!

Re: 31\'s, 33\'s, 0r 35\'s....

what are you talking about??? I burned up an auto tranny, with a 6.2 2wd pickup and 235s /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Re: 31\'s, 33\'s, 0r 35\'s....

When you go from stock size tires to largers sizes you need to keep in mind you're making your tranny work harder. Go to big, you'll burn your tranny up if you don't regear the axles. But in this case, I don't think 33's will burn up the tranny.

Re: 31\'s, 33\'s, 0r 35\'s....

I got what you mean Z3PR, I was just saying you can smoke a tranny with just about any setup if your to hard on things. But driven sensibley 33s should break awhole lot. I did a ton of burnouts with that old C10 I had(16 years old and real stupid /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif)

[/ QUOTE ]Oh, okay. Yeah, if you beat on it, something is bound to break sooner or later. I also have fried more then one tranny in my youth do to beating the sh_t out of the vehicle. Went throught 3 one summer in the 73 Camaro, LOL.

Re: 31\'s, 33\'s, 0r 35\'s....

Ok, here is the new dilema; There is a kid at school with some decent sized tires on his truck. I think they are equivalent to a 31-33 (some metric size). Anyways, I really want to have the biggest tires at school... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif if you know what I mean... /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif So I think I might just go all out and buy the 35's. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

about the "big tires at school thing"

let me give you some advice about this froma guy a little older than you, who's been through this sort of thing.

unless you're gonna put 53s on your truck and shut him up once and for all then don't worry about it. believe me it doesn't matter. if you're that insucur, start lifting weights.

as far as tires. buy some used 31s and a winch.

if you absolutly can't stand 31s then get 33s but put 35s out of your mind. you'll just end up cursing them on the trail.

here's another side of it... you're in college. you're "that guy with the truck". you're gonna have chicks to haul around, friends to move, partys to go to. big tires get the cops looking your way, which isn't good ever, but especially not in college.

there's more to 4wheeling than what size tires you have. one word - lockers. buy some of these. even though most people don't do it, i think 31's and lockers would own as long as you had good skid plates. small tires are gonna keep your breakage to minimum. get some heavy duty diff covers. stay away from rocks.

as far as guys saying "4 inch lift and 35 are the way to go", i'm sorry but can you say poseur? that would look really poseur.

get some 31's, lockers and a winch and you are set.

just some advice from someone who's been there.

Not bad advice, but the post is over a year old so it might be a case of shutting the barn door after the horse has left. i'm sure that sometime in the previous 12 months he has already bought tires...of some size.

I never cursed 35's on the trail. That being said it's not like you can just bolt a set up and be an instant hero either, so I mostly agree with 31's and locker(s). :)

If you're set on 35's, think of doing a 3/4 ton axle swap. Much cheaper then regearing, and it isn't that hard too find a set of 3/4 ton axles with 4.10 gears.
