I want to keep the stock gears in my 76 K5, I have a 3" suspention lift. Could I run 31's on my truck with the stock gearing? Do you think 31's would look really goofy with a 3" lift?

I am going to keep the stock TH350 tranny, its pretty much burnt out right now so If I rebuild it I want to run the right stuff so I dont burn it out again.

Are 31's alot bigger then the original stock tires? I just want the easyiest way out without swamping to much stuff out..

Thanks..

I hope it wont look horrible with 31's and a 3" suspention lift..

It may look a bit odd. You can run up to a 33x12.50R15 without a lift and minimal fender trimming. I currently run 32x11.50R15 BFGs with no lift on my '73.

pic whore ;) haha hmm...im going to be running a 4" lift with 33s on my daily driver...course that will be a while before that happens...

Thanks for the picture..

I had 33's on it, I think thats the reason my tranny burnt out.. Im not going to 4x4 this truck to hard. Maybe ill just do 32's, they will be cheaper then 33's, better MPG and wont be too hard on my tranny. Sounds good to me.

with stock gears?

do you know what your gear ratio is?

3.07s 33's and a th350 shouldnt kill it...but yes the 32 will be slightly better than 33s in all teh areas you mentioned in your post.

EDIT...i ran 33s with 3.08s for a while, wheni first got my truck m 700 died (on stock 31s) and i put a th400 in it:D to eliminate any futre problems in that area, since then i have upgraded to 3.73s because this truck will STAY on 33s for a while. im building a playtoy/mudtruck that will get big, deep gears, rode HARD.

Yep 3.07's.. I agree with the 32's. Im not going for looks , just reliabliity/practical. 32's sound like they fit the bill.

here is my burb with a 4" lift and 265/75 (31.5") stock tires. I think it looks funny. Buying 35's soon.

hmm, it does look sorta funny. I only have a 3" lift though. Maybe with 32's it should look a bit more evened out then yours, what do you think?

I think you're worrying too much about your tranny. I've run 33s on two of my daily drivers over the past 10 years with no issues at all. If you don't drive like an idiot your moving parts will stay intact. You'll be fine. If it were me, and I already had a 3" lift on it, I'd go with 33s. They're not that big and they'll fill out the wheelwells nicely. :)

Here's a '73 that was on eBay awhile back. 33x12.50R15s and 3" suspension lift. This truck has an awesome stance.

You guys are right, the 33's give it that extra edge doesnt it??
Man, tires are so flippin spendy now a days.. That why I was hoping I could get away with 31's

I do have 2 decent BFG 33's, so all I really need to get are 2 more but thats still like $450 bucks out of pocket.. I could buy a brand new gun for that much LOL.. Maybe ill try and find some used ones somewhere.. The BFG's I have are all terrain 33 12/50R/15's, so keep an eye out for me will ya?

Really unknown why the tranny burnt out . A teardown could point to a possibility . I don't think it neccessarily means the tires did it . Number one killer is heat , followed by lack of maintainence . Both usually get compounded by the way one drives .

I have done many things wrong , by the internet 4x4 forum board logic , and my tranny still works . And mine is a th700r4 . It probably was rebuilt by the original owner , but I really have no proof of that .

I have had 31's on 3.08's and wheeled , daily drove , and towed a car on mountain roads . Next was 32's with 3.08's and I wheeled and daily drove . After that was 33's and 3.08's and I wheeled and daily drove .... as well as towed with a shackle flip . I admit I used third gear alot unless on flat ground when I had 33's and 3.08's .

Later on I went 33's and 3.73's and it was better . Then came the 35's and 3.73's , then finally the 35's and 4.56's . All various combinations daily driven from 2001 to late 2006 when I bought my pickup . And lately I have driven my Blazer to work off and on again , with the same th700r4 .

So I have only a few words for you :

Big *** transmission cooler , and a fluid change once in a while :thumb:

Here is about 3" with 33's. I think it looks about right. 31's will look small and your tranny should be fine with the 33's. I had 3.07's with mine and it was fine. Not sure on your gearing but if anything it should be the same or better than mine was.
There are alot of cheap 33's out there. I think even walmart has one in their brand.

I dont have any pics but Im running 31s with a 4inch lift on my dd k10. It doesnt look that bad but I dont really see the point if you plan on keeping the tires. Ive got some 33s to put on mine after I get the motor lined out.

also I ran 33s with 3.08 gears for 2 years and never had any problems, even had a strong enough motor to bark them on dry pavement but it was pretty much a dog when pulling a hill. It also got around 16mpg on the highway but sucked horribly around town cause it took so much to get it going. I got lucky with this new truck and it came with 3.73s.
