327...?

I appreciate all the info and opinions you guys have given me, like others have said, theres some things really holding me back to get the most out of my truck but luckily its just a DD and not much else. for now i should just worry about getting it running better than its current state... good thing i play lotto because between the 3 vehicles i have i dont think i could make 1 good running reliable car...

What happened to the Oldsmobile idea? As for the gearing, I am guessing you could have a set of 3.42 geared, 1/2 ton axles bought for $100. What about that makes it difficult and expensive??? I have several sets of half ton axles that I am hauling in for iron, they are worth nothing.

Ive got a junkyard 350 chevy with unknown milage in my 86, had to change the cam bearings because they were bad, mains and rods looked fine to i never took the heads off or the bottom end out. I replaced the oil pan gasket because it had been off before due to something hitting the pan. Everything looked good, new 30 dollar cloyes street true roller from orileys, summit k1103 cam (might consider the k1102 for a daily, mines got a little lope and dont like to idle below 800) new intake gaskets slapped the mid 70s carb on there. For around 300-400 bucks (Depending on what you get the shortblock for) you can have yourself a plenty fun 350. All the 18 year olds i went mudding with could have swore i had me a 12.5:1 454 with a 3/4 race cam :haha:

Oh, as a note, I knew the motor ran good before we took it out of the other truck, that helps as well when buying a used motor.

I would have LOVED to swap in my olds 350 but i wound up giving it to my brother for our 87 cutlass... to find a matching set of axles on long island is a total crap shoot. the junkyards charge top dollar (especially since medford auto wreckers became famous) and that filters down to the private parties that know how much the junk yards are getting. living on an island doesnt exactly help, traveling through the city or via the ferry to CT. becomes a pain in the a$$ especially to pick up a bulky item such as rears.
at this point in time i have no reason to swap axles. this is not a serious off road truck nor is it a street racer. its my daily driver, so for now the gearing suits my needs (as sick as that sounds) even though it has its downsides of course.

You have a 2.73 axle, which is a 3 series carrier in the 8.5 10 bolts. You could always have a shop installed a new set of gears into your used axle assemblies. I think you would love either 3.73s or 4.10s. I have 3.08s in my k5 right now, but with the 3.08 first gear of the 700r4 it helps, and the power of the 350 helps push the 32s ive got on it.

Thats very true, i came across a guy back west of me who does alot of heavy duty differentials, i actually bought my tires from him a while ago and need to contact him about a 4 speed cutlass console so i'll ask for a round about quote and info on what gears to go with when the time comes (if ever at the rate i'm going). i have an sm465 so with the low gear and the first gear it definetly helps to get things moving. i also have 32's on it (stock size was 215-75-15 ...thats not a misprint) no over drive kinda limits me but luckily i'm not building this to go fast, more for reliability than anything else.

For a short swim and a drive you could come buy the 400sb and pair of Vortec heads I have stashed in the garage. Heads need rebuild, I got them for free and would just pass them on to you. 400sb came from a running truck that was just too rusty to save, been sitting in my basement bolted to an engine stand for a few years now. Could use a freshening up with new seals and sheetmetal or a complete rebuild if you want to start fresh. Got it for $350ish worth of Camaro parts I traded for it, I'd sell it for $200 just to move it. I had pipe dreams of putting it in my K5 but with the TBI, I figure if my engine craps out I'll either replace it with a direct replacement crate or do a 5.3 or 6.0 swap. PM me if you're interested.

I would avoid a 400. They eat gas and take a strong cooling system or your almost guaranteed to have heating issues. It seems mine has been a little worse than others, but my big block 4 core radiator and dual electric fans is really not enough cooling power for my 406.

If you dont mind me asking, what electric fans are you running?

There were multiple 400's for sale on Long Island's Craigslist.

yeah, i'm surprised, youd figure 4600cfm should do the trick. hopefully the 4000cfm derales cool my big block. the flex a lites seem to have a low amp draw compared to the derales.

The chevy truck with the 14 bolt and 400 for $450 was sold a half hour before i was supposed to check it out with my mechanic friend:frown1: as my grandpa says... "youre a day light and a dollar short"

That looks like a dual bolt pattern bellhousing TH350 too, ready for the 455 pontiac.
I know where that guy lives, he's near the bar my mom works at. next time i'm over there on the weekend helping her i'm gonna drop by and see what else he may have. he has a huge yard full of old cars and motorcycles. maybe i can find some interesting things. his neighbor has a bada$$ 80's short bed K10 that sits in his driveway too

In my 71 Cutlass, i had a 455 rebuilt for it. that cars the reason why i have no money to spend freely. its like the money pit... it started off as just taking care of some body work and things started to pile on.. but its my first car and i love it to death and will never part with it, i'll live out of it before i sell it (i guess we've all said that at one time or another) but shes my pride and joy. rust and all:D
