I have a 1989 6.2L 3/4 ton Suburban. It currently has stock tires, 31.5", and wheels. The PO put a 4" lift with tuff country springs in front and blocks in the rear. I have 4.10 open gears in the 14b sf and 10b front. I want lockers soon. I currently have the th400 tranny, but will be upgrade to some type of OD (NV4500) hopefully next summer.

I like at 3500ft elevation in the Cascade Mts. The truck is a sorta daily driver, but does not get driven daily. Right now it is not to good for more than 65mph (It goes faster but the 6.2 is spinning pretty fast). There are tons of forrest service roads around here and I plan on getting into more wheeling. We do get snow.

My real concern is towing. I do not tow often, but do tow up to 12000lbs of firewood every now and then. I never go far with firewood and most of the time I am on forrest service roads. We are planning on getting a light weight travel trailer, somewhere in the 5-7K lb range. The travel trailer is a few years off at least though (unless my folks spring for it).

I can afford both 33's and the 35's. Should I just get the 35's and be done with it? Will I see much difference in towing? There is also the 34's.

Will an 8" rim be better or worse than a 10" rim with 35x12.5 trxus MT's? Desert Rat has a pretty good price on a package deal with 10" rims.

thanks,

michael

35's look better with 4" lift in my opinion. I'd think with 4.10 gears you'd be fine, even with the trailer.

Go 35 for sure, w/ 4:10 gears and a th400 you will be at a better RPM range then you are now for highway speeds. Even with a OD tranny thats not a bad setup with the 6.2L. I would ditch the idea of lift blocks for the rear if your going to do some towing, the axle warp they cause will make for some serious pucker moments! Best bet would be lift springs all around its more expensive but worth every penny if your towing. Good luck, and BTW those Trxus MT's are fantastic tires! I would go with 10" rim, they will wear a little more evenly and give you a little shorter profile so you wont have to trim your fenders as much.

taylor - the truck already has the lift blocks. The guy I bought it from had it installed. I definately want to change the rear to a shackle flip or springs. It is on a long list of things.

I will be going with the 35 x 12.5 Trxus MT's and black steel wheel.

Desert Rat has the packages for $1199 for the 16x10 wheel or $1229 for the 17x9 wheel. Most folks run 16's correct? I will be also picking up a 5th tire and wheel, probably matching.

Any other good vendors I should check out?

I will get a price from our local les schab.

with a 14bolt rear (even semi) and that ratio 35s would be pretty nice, i think. i'll probably get 33x12.5 for mine, but i have a 10blts rear and a wimpier ratio.

8" rims are better than 10", imo. you can air down more without slipping the bead.

have you checked the true diameter of the tires? most are actually a little smaller than their advertised size.

well, i think les schab is out of the running. They wanted almost $280 a tire after balance and valve stem, not including tax, wheels, or freight (special order item).

I tried to search for desert rat here but did not come up with much. Are they any good?

Who do CK5ers buy there tires from?

I can vouch for the 35" Trxus MT's and towing, my buddy has a f250 that he uses to tow stuff over to the beach and it does great trip after trip...

oh btw besides great handling while under load they are wearing great too, especially for such a big vehicle (3/4 ton extended cab long bed w/ his camper and a trailer), he is at almost 30,000 and they look perfect.
