Guys, where do you guys with the (loose term here) "stock" Blazers carry your 33" spare without going to the custom bumper type tire carriers? I am trying to keep my 72' pretty basic except for a 4" lift & 33's, need ideas on where to carry my spare. Thanks in advance

The stock carrier can probably handle a 33 in tire. I modified my stock carrier to handle a 35, but I didn't like how far it stuck up over the seat so I don't use it anymore. It now lays down flat in the back of the bed when I carry it.

I think the stock mount will carry a 33" spare. Mounts on the passenger side rear behind the back seat. If you want one, I have the original out of my 71.

I carried my 35" spare the same way. Took up too much space so I mounted it on the bumper.

I have the original swing out tire carrier that mounts on the rear of the Blazer, I just put it back on and the 33" fits on it pretty good. I may need to have the body beefed up some so that it does not do any long term damage, I will see how that works for now.

I do appreciate the offer though :waytogo:

I dont think those swing away carriers are original. The factory put them on a stand in the bed. Ive read that the swing aways tend to rip out the mounts from the body unless you use some reinforcement plates on the inside of the body panel. Maybe a 33 is smaller than the sizes used by people who had them fail.

I will definitly have the those areas reinforced :bow:

I was not sure if they came as an option or not :dunno::dunno:

I am going to do a modification in the back for an amp and woofers so I was trying to avoid putting my tire back there, it tends to eat up a lot of room. We will see what the final outcome is.

What about going with a smaller tire as a spare (say 31")? It is, just a spare tire afterall.

Unless you have some lockers anywhere I would think the 31 would at least get you home to fix the real tire (or put on your extra 33).

I have a 31" spare along with 35" tires. I can't imagine trying to get a 33 or 35 tire in the back cargo area. Too much real estate taken up!

Just an idea......

My lack of car know how is on display here , would that hurt any gearing or anything else running different size tires?? :dunno::dunno:

You could probably run it on the front for a short distance with the hubs unlocked, but I wouldn't do it on the rear unless I was desperate. Most of the time my spare is my cell phone. If I get a flat, i call my wife to load up the spare in the minivan and drive it over. I haven't had to use that option yet though. My spare is only in the back on a long trip.

If you have open differentials, the axle gears would move like you are turning....(constantly). As you typically turn, the outside wheel makes more revolutions than the inside wheel. Thats what an open diff does....allow each wheel to turn independently.

If you have a locker or limited slip, it tried to keep both wheels spinning the same revolutions each. If you had a smaller tire, it would bind quite a bit and would not be advisible.

If open diff, I would just use the spare to get you to a shop to get the 33" tire fixed. Definitley don't use it long term.

Again if open diff, imagine some of the little cars and their spare tires. They are dinky compared to the normals tires. They are only used to get you to a tire shop for a repair and tell you not to go over 50 mph. Same principle.

Do you still want to part with that tire carrier? Let me know man, Thanks

I dug it out and took a picture. No rust, just dirty from sitting around.
