Need a little input on which route to go. I'll give a quick rundown of my truck, and what I plan on doing with it

1989 GMC 4wd crew cab short box, gonna be a 427 tall deck, TBI, TH400 till I get a flywheel and clutch for the NV4500, div Ford 205, HP60 and a van 14ff, both have 4.10s. Right now the truck has about 6" of lift, but gonna need to go up a wee more up front, right now there is no drivetrain, and sits sorta level. Figure at least a Zero rate, the axle is actually too far forward. I can figure that out once I get the drivetrain in.

The tires are brand spankin' new 35x16x16.5 boggers on 12" wide chrome Barts. The way the truck is now, I can run those tires and not really worry about rubbing real hard, the motor will have enough to turn the tires, and still be able to drive it down the highway at speed.

But a buddy texts me and asked if I want to buy my old 40" boggers back. They were brand new as well, had maybe a 1000 miles if that, enough to wear the nipples off. They were on 15x12" bart 8 lugs. Now if I go with this tire, will have to lift it more, at least 3-4", and gonna go with cut outs. I drove my old 89 with these 40" with 3.73 gears with a big block and got around just fine, so with the 4.10s and the torque of the 427, should be better. With the 4500 even moreso. But gearing wouldn't be a big deal either.

I have an 08' Toyota Tundra for a daily driver, so it's not like it would be driven every day, tho probly drive it ALL THE TIME just because I want to get it done. Most of the wheeling I do is mud, seems that's all that's up here, and general trails, but I get bore with that pretty quick.

As for as cost, buddy wants my 35" boggers, so he would buy those and wouldn't need much to get the 40s. Then would need some bigger lift springs up front, maybe a small block to level the rear, or if I can find some lift springs for 56" go that route.

Couple of reference shots...

I would go with the 40s. You may not need anymore lift with cutouts and a zero rate. Maybe a small body lift. The 40s would be better for the mud

I think I'm gonna more than just that, even with the 35s and 6" lift on the other truck, they rubbed pretty hard, that wasn't even trying to flex. But, that has the axle in the stock location and no more clearance with the flares. The offset of the wheels and the sheer size/width of the 40s makes it hard to keep from getting shredded from hitting the body.

I have time, buddy needs to come up with some money to buy mine, and still need to get the truck to my house to work on it. Need to get some flares, after that wait and see how they fit.

Go 40...or i assume 18x39. I have had both and the 35 boggers made one trail trip.....ground clearance was an issue for me with the 35's and 1 tons. They dug really well.....but my ground clearance was so bad that it was easy to high center the truck on the pumpkins when I got on the gas in the mud. The 18x39's were AWESOME! I had mine on 15x14 chrome barts that I ground half my calipers off to make fit. I had 4:56's...lockers 205/sm465 combo and a stock 350 (new) and it did great wheelin.

I think Im gonna. It's gonna be a play/work truck/toy hauler, so might as well do it the way I wanted to all along. Just need to get some parts.

go w/ 40's i've got em on mine and love them. maybe look into longer shackles w/ the zero rates?

I've got long ass shackles now, can't remember the length. Zero rate is definate, need to find some 8" springs, or some 4-6" 52s since I have the B52 kit on there now.

35"s on tons sucks. It's like being on street tires and 10 bolts again.

How in the world do you guys need so much lift? I'm about 3" over stock with the front in stock location. I have a VERY flexible suspension and zero rubbing with 35"s. I could run a 37" if I could afford it.

How wide of a tire/rim are you running?? I'd like to see someone stuff a 40" tire on a 12" wide wheel that is 18" wide on 3-4" of lift, and still have fenders.

I don't mind trimming to fit, but want to run cut out flares, and can only trim and modify so much. I'm not a big fan of huge tire no lift look, I like a big tire, sorta big lift.

Might want to measure the 35 Boggers. The 35s I had a while ago actually measured 33 inches. So, it will be more like going from a 33 to a 39.5.

Just something to think about when you are looking at adding more clearance.

I will cut the body to hell before I go with a body lift, I can't stand them. 1" is fine, can't really tell the difference.

As for caliper grinding, not on a high pinion, they have 2 piston calipers. I'll probly get a set of 3/4 ton brackets from Blackbirds.
