35 splin Warn Hub Problem "Ground the ends, still hits"

Re: 35 splin Warn Hub Problem \"Ground the ends, still hits\"

There is a post on Pirate4x4 that may have the answer to your problem. The post deals with a 35 spline stuff in a Ford axle but there is reference to a bearing race that will push the bearing hub out an 1/8".

In the post the info is verified by Steve Gerstner of Differential Engineering.

<font color="blue">The fix is to use a 382S bearing race on the inner bearing and it sets the hub out .125 or 1/8".

Hope this helps.

Sweet!
I'm about to do the 35 spline conversion, and i started getting worried until i read that post on pirate. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

I don't see how that will help "our" cause. We already have the chevy knuckles. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If you install the different race it would push the hub out away from the axle stub. You would need to verify that there would still be enough engagement of the locking hub dial to the locking hub body.

You would need to verify

Not trying to be a smartass but why is this only hitting a select few of us????Is it just that the others have not noticed?

Ah...yeah... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I don't have a good answer. I guess since it's a screw plunger thingy you'd probably run out of turn on the dial since it would want to reach in deeper. I hadn't really thought about that aspect. **thinking aloud** Let's see, if the stroke is a 1/8" less you'd need to make sure the gear inside the hub body had enough engagement. I guess you could put grease on it and check for the stroke marks, maybe?

I'd be interested to know if this problem affects both styles of hub (with &amp; without set screw).

Re: 35 splin Warn Hub Problem \"Ground the ends, still hits\"

Well I'll change the race and see what happens.

Re: 35 splin Warn Hub Problem \"Ground the ends, still hits\"

Good luck! I'm looking forward to hearing if this works. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Well for kicks I stopped at the auto Zone tonight but no luck. will get them at Lunch tomorrow at the gear place.

Re: 35 splin Warn Hub Problem \"Ground the ends, still hits\"

You don't have to worry about the locking hub spacing if you use the 382S race, the locking hub is totally located relative to the wheel bearing hub, and the entire wheel bearing hub moves out when the race moves out. The things you have to watch are the spindle thread length, spindle nut clearance to the back of the hub and spline engagement on the stubshaft. None of these, especially the stub shaft splines, should be a real problem. It's just a pain in the keister taking your wheel bearing hub apart to change out a stub shaft.

The problem must be somewhat variable, I don't know what parts vary but some axles have problems, some don't. Some have MAJOR problems. We have one here that needs at least another 1/8", maybe more like 3/16" less stubshaft.

Maybe some users are just pushing the shaft assembly in till the seals come loose and that's where it rides?
