35 spline chromo question... neck down?

well i got my 35 spline inners and outters the other day and they "neck down" me and my friend were discussing this because his 35 spline (non cromo) dont neck down, is there any reason for the cromo to neck down maybe because it is stronger than non? also my inners have a "neck" on them, almost like its where the seal rides, anybody know why??

The shaft is only as strong as the minor diameter of the splines

It seems to me that the higher dollar stubs are necked down

There is a lot more to axle shaft design than simply whether it necks down or not, I'm not going to explain all of the in/outs but the splines create a big stress riser which is why you see neck down type shafts, it eliminates that failure point.
