Can anybody tell me anything about an engine with the casting #3982888. I need to know if it is a 4 bolt main and what year it is and anything else that can be discovered with the casting #. Maybe i could call the a chevy dealership???

Are you absolutley sure you got all those digits right? One or two of those "8" could be a "3" or a "6" with some grime in it, making it look like an "8".
Reason I´m asking is I can´t find that number at http://www.mortec.com/, but there are several # that looks a lot like it. F.ex: 3932388 and 3932386

please check it again I can't find it either. Also If its in a vehicle tell us which one. And look on the smooth "pad" behind where he head bolts to the block there are a series of numbers and letters, see if you can find the letters, most have 3 like "TYX" or something like that. JS

what I meant to say is behind the alternator is the smooth pad. (sorry, just woke up, still hung over from going to the yankee game).

Thanks for checking. I will double check the # but i can't do it until sunday or monday. This is a motor i might buy and the guy who owns it is out of town until then. He said it came out of a 79 truck.

I have the Chevy Small Block Casting number guide and that number is not in this book, check your number and repost it.

If it´s any of the two numbers I suggested, the 350 is a 69. The 3932386 has 4 bolt mains, while the 3932388 could either have 2 or 4 bolt mains. If the latter, your only solution is to pop the pan and check for yourself. Remember the 2 bolt mains is good up to 400hp, maybe even 500. So there´s no reason to ditch that engine if it´s in overall good shape, should you find out it´s a 2 bolt one. Downer would be the heads if they´re the original ones, as they´re pre-smog ones without hardened exhaust seats. Heads without hardened seats doesn´t like unleaded gas. Ok, I´m done now

All right, here's the real casting #3932388. Also the pad behind the alternater says 19J204183V012OHV. Please tell me anything you can about this motor.

the first part of that sequence of digits is the vin # from the car the engine came out of. the last three are what motor it is like say---- OHV = 350cubes -180hp, 220ft lbs of torque, used in a 1/2 pickup, etc. etc. etc. I wish I had my numbers book on me.......JS

Jimmy, thank you for that info. I had no idea that the vin for the car was on the engine too.

I wonder if the DMV could run a vin for me and tell me what kind of car the motor came out of.

3932388 is a '69 - '76 350 block.

HV was only used for a '65 Corvette 327. Could it be HU? That would be a '69 350, 255hp, 4bbl, originally used in a full size car.

I just double checked and i'm positive it says HV. I wonder what motor it is.

If you got the time, pop the valvecover on one cylinderhead and give us that number. It looks like the block number, about the same amount of digits. Of course it doesn´t tell you anything about the block, it´s just that I´m so d*mn curious

In '65, that would have been a small-journal 327, so that block would not have been made into a 350 using normal parts.

Sorry Blazer1970, I changed my reply just 1 minute after I posted it, and that´s the post you answered to, right?
Anyway folks, I talked about the 327 & 350 having the same bore-size. And that it could be a 327 made into a 350 by various rebuilding.
Sorry again for the confusion

I popped the valve cover and got this #3932441. Is this the right one. Right under this # it said A179. In a separate place on the head it said GM with a 4 right beneath it.

I'm really confused about what kind of motor i have just bought.

A179 is the casting date code. January 17, 1969.

V0120HV on your block means that the motor was assembled in Flint, MI, on January 20.

So does this mean i have a 350 out of a 1969 Impala?
