so Im building the 350tbi out of my 89 k5. ive currently got it torn down to a short block and I just wanna do a mild build. what cam/ lifters would you guys recommend and what durations on your cam would you prefer. its gonna be a street truck with some mild wheeling. so im gonna start with cam/ lifters and heads. and after taking measurements then ill see what im gonna do for piston/rings/rods.

also its from my 89 blazer but it doesn't have the center bolted valve covers yet its throttle body injected

it didn't have roller lifters so I don't know. but it has had motor work done before the intake manifold was rtved on and it had a adjustable fuel pressure regulator

Are there three cast bosses in the middle of the lifter valley?

yes I planned on 96-2000 vortec heads and the intake to match up to them. as for cam, I just am curious on durations beause ive herd of having to big of a cam can be worse. as far as chips that's definitely something ill be looking into because I have herd not so good things lately about tbichips.com

read up on his stuff in the real world . . . . his chips are hit or miss a lot .

eagle mark here is the chip man and has said he has fixed a lot of his socalled plug n play chips.

I have TBIchips tune. Its passable but I wanted better so now Im data logging myself and working with "Tuned Performance" from thirdgen.org for the tuning.

My TBIchips tune runs rich enough to through code 45 now and then and pings pretty bad @ low rpm load. A little bird told me that theres typically way to much timing in his tunes and they're kind of a shot in the dark.

Proper tuning is gonna be the toughest and most important part. Personally in a wheeler I like the stock TBI heads. They have just as good numbers down low as the vortecs just quickly fall off about 4500ish. I run my truck from idle to 3500-4000.

I wouldn't go any bigger than .450+/- lift and you want 113' or better LSA

what about intake/exhaust durations?

Don't know what brand my cam is but the specs are

Adv. Dur. for the Intakes- .260 Exhaust- .264.
Duration @.050 Intakes- .204 exhaust- .214.
cam lift for the intakes- .284 exhaust- .300. Valve lift for the intakes- .426 exhaust- .450.
Lobe separation is 113’

I think that pretty close to the limit for TBI.

Oh I have heard that about his chips, When I didn't know ANYTHING I got one and was pretty pleased, I just meant to check out some of the modifications he recommends, that's all

The real key is to decide what YOU want from your truck, for me, stock is fine until I break it real good, then I will figure something else out, One guy on here felt the need for a 572 in his Suburban, and it is AWESOME. Its all in what you want and can afford though.

I want more than stock I want the truck to get up and go when I want it to and I want it to have a little thump to the idle, but I also want every day reliability which is why im not going into boring or stroking it. just cam/lifters/heads/intake

I also still need to find out a way to see if this 350 can take a roller cam/ lifters as I don't know if it was the original motor too the 89 blazer. how can I find out the year of the motor? or how to tell if it can be roller?

after doing some research and learning about heads/intakes, I have found out that on this motor it does not have tbi heads which means the intake manifold is aftermarket too because tbi heads are the only chevy sbc heads with angled bolt holes for the intake manifold. and as far as I know all tbi heads have center bolted valve covers which these don't. so these heads and tbi intake were put on an older motor. why? I don't have the oil pan off yet so maybe it is a 4 bolt main block!!!!! or is it an aftermarket intake with older better flowing heads?
