Hey All,

Getting ready to build a new motor for my K5 blazer, I have a build planned out but want to make sure that the community thinks it will be a reasonable combination

Since I do not know if this block is tapped for roller or not I am going to stay Flat Tappet(I have a budget to keep!) Shooting for a pump gas 91 octane at sea level combo, 10:1 with aluminum heads should be doable i think?

Summit Pistons SUM-17350C-00
Summit Heads: SUM-162108
RVMorseMachine Ported TBI
Port existing OEM Intake Manifold
Comp Cams K12-262-4
1.6:1 Roller Rockers

Plus having my local machine shop resurface crank/rods.

Also looking at swap to the 7427 ECM. After tuning the 7730 for a TPI build I did going to the 7747 ECM is slow and painful.

Want to validate that this cam should be easily tunable and that the combo should work well?

Thanks in advance!

roller cam swap can be done cheep if using used parts from guys with lt1 engines . back in the day you could get a good used cam/lifters and parts for 100-150 bucks from guys swapping in bigger cams . and these cams were bigger than the tiny tbi cams and still efi friendly with a tune.

any thing you do will require a custom chip burnt .

stock truck engines in tbi trim were flat tappet cam . but the block could be swapped with the roller cam on most all of them . gm just didnt give us roller cams . cars got them ,.

With the reduction of zinc in the oils (even in diesel oils now apparently, and going to get worse) to me going roller is almost a necessity. It's at least a bit of insurance if you want to look at it that way...no question whether the cam will go flat or not because of the modern oils. Or having to run expensive additives over the life of the engine.

That looks like a fairly mild cam. I don't think the general rule has changed, up to a full point of compression with AL heads has been considered possible over iron heads. Looking at other pics out there those are a "fast burn" style chamber, so good to go there. I don't see why you won't be able to run on 87. The Vortec engines are 9.4:1 and I've had no issues with detonation, as long as my tune is good. It needs a lot less timing than the earlier heads/engines.

Have you contemplated a crate L31? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-12530283/overview/ You can find them for ~$1800 elsewhere (ebay) and unfortunately you'll find it's cheaper than the sum of all the work and parts, not even counting your time, of building an engine yourself. And you end up with guided rockers, roller cam, warranty, etc. Have to figure out the intake piece, but that's doable.

I looked at a cam like that.. 1500-5500rpm...

sounds like a sweet build...

I too have an L05 motor (out of a 1991 caprice police car)
I threw a set of 1996 Tahoe vortec heads on it
weiand power plus+ dual plane vortec intake
holley truck avenger
full tube headers
msd dizzy, msd 6al with rev limiter

but I threw in a idle-5000rpm cam in and couldn't be happier..

other than the parts I threw on, I had t replace 2 pistons due to something small falling down the intake - ughhhhhhhh
so we honed the walls, new rings, piston and bearings on just those 2 cylinders. Others sat with their 88k mile (unknown cop idle time) miles...

Unfortunately I am at a point in my life where I'm older and don't really hang out with people as my kids (well 1 is 18 now) have sports and I don't have much time to myself. So I don't get out to wheel or see other trucks and capabilities. I joined a SJ Square body FB group and met 2 guys so far.. 1 guy with a diesel in his square. sent me a video of him flooring it and it is not a rocket but a torque monster.
another (his friend) has a mud/denter beater and a rebuilding like the 80s project... the 80s rebuilding truck is sweet and a super lopey cam .509 lift I think he said...with a 2500rpm stall converter
I took him for a ride after we set my timing and air fuel screws... my truck was screaming great!! best that it has ever. We get back and I'm like.. well what do you think... cuz I don't know.. he is like.. umm you spun your hawgs really good back there.. I'm like... umm yeah I can do that all day long! LOL... and that wasn't in granny gear...
