i always thought never go past 3k, then 4k, now im starting to push 5k when im in a hurry...is 5k about the max i should push it?

I've pushed my '77 motor WAY past 5k several times. Same with my bone stock '76 Monte Carlo 350.

i never take mine past 5,000rpm but they can go to like 6 with no problems but mine losses power after about 4,500rpm

you can rev till it doesn't want to anymore, not good for anything but it happens. Mine loses power around like 4500-5000 but I rev higher to keep RPMs up between shifts. I really need a new motor, Balancing is an important factor. My 355 is fresh but unbalanced.

I shift at six grand with my 305. Peak ponies is at 5600. The bottom end is held together with ARP studs though. I have no problem taking an ARPed motor to six grand as long as the valvetrain is up to the task. I wouldn't willingly go past ~6200 with budget lifters though. Floating valves and having lifters go soft isn't a good idea at high rpm.

I wouldn't go past 4800 on a motor I didn't put together. Most smallblocks came with a 4500rpm redline. I wouldn't take a motor past 4000 if it was driven by an old man scared of the skinny pedal.

I wouldn't go past 5700 on a cast-cranked 383 or 400 with short rods.

I used to have a 6,000 RPM rev limiter in my MSD box, but I've since changed it to 5,000 because I don't see any need for it to rev higher.

The stock (balanced) bottom end on my 350 (which is a rebuild of a Hecho in Mexico Goodwrench 350 crate using its original rods, bolts, but new cast pistons) in my 71 ElCamino pulls shifts between 6300-6500. Im going to bring the shift points back down to around 5500-6000 for some margin and besides, its pretty much maxed out for power up there. Id say 6.5-7K things might start coming apart. Most stock motors cant pull those rpms cuz the cam, lifters and heads wont let it.

I also discovered the rev limiter on my LS1 is 6750 /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

my stock 73 350 when it was new would float the valves at 5500 now with the cam, valve springs, and hevy duty rod and main bolts, and balencing, ive taken it to 6500 with no problems at all

Sorry for the hijack, but what rpms do you all cruise at 75-80mph for 4-8 hours at a time, as in a long road trip

Used to manually shift the '88 IROC with the TPI 350 at the drag strip at about 6000-6500 with no probs, felt like it still wanted to pull more. Roller cam and lifters will help ya with that though. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I take my 406 up to 5500-5700 every once and a while but it peaks in power long before. It handles it just fine but I have good quality fresh lifters. SBC stock bottom ends are pretty stout, I have heard from experienced race guys that they can take 7,000RPMS with good bolts, splayed caps, and a valve train that can take it. When I had the local dyno shop dyno my 406 they had mine wound up to 5,400RPM's. THey had a 68' camaro there with a stock bottom end 327, alum heads and said they were feeding it a 300HP shot of nitrous at 7K no prob. /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

I don't think I have ever got my combination past 3500 , even getting on it. I wish I had more gear. Hitting 3rd on freeway it only goes up to 2500 at 70 or so. Hitting it from a light it shifts well before 3 grand in any gear. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Adjust you TV cable. It can firm up your shifts and raise your shift points. You must be careful that your TC is still locking up after the adjustments though.

Harley , I already got it adjusted pretty well, hits into second if I'm on it, and I can give it some gas at cruise to increase speed without gear hunting, and it will hit passing gear when I really get it. I just gotta live with it until I get the 350 prepped and step up to 4.10's. Working well for now, quick enough and wheels too . Thanks Harley /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

if i keep my rpm's right around 3k, then punch it, it pulls like you dont believe

65 in 3rd doin about 2300, which is how i like it, cause thats where my power starts
