Okay, I am just a shade tree mechanic here, but I have done my research. I bought a 90 v10 that came with a Vortech supercharger. Long story short the moron before me didn't invest in his supercharger. No bypass, boost guage ext. About a year ago my (ex)local mechanic said he thought my superchager was bad, so he removed the belt. I drove it the same without the belt about a month, then let it set for a few months. I replaced the belt after doing some research and adding bypass valve. Now when I start her up she has a slight white smoking coming from exhaust. Afraid it might be coolant. Also Engine knocks slightly under load. Anyways, with my luck it's prolly best to fix it all. I want to rebuild the charger and replace the engine. My question is what kind ouf power comes out of a 383 TBI? Also any suggestions on how to keep my compression low but keep low end power. The supercharger is a centrifugal type. I know people always say they like screw or roots better, but I am not towing here... off roading.. I want my power in the mid to high RPM. I plan to run maybe 8 to 10 PSI. hopefully 450ft/lbs? horses and gas doesn't matter.

People who like roots style better, just like the looks most of the time.

You have two seperate issues, the white smoke on startup and knocking. I'd bet the knocking is too much boost + timing + lack of fuel. All in all adding up to detonation.

Does the truck have an aftermarket chip to match the blower? If not, I guarantee the computer is giving it too much timing advance under load. The ECM doesn't realize there is a blower there, it just sees some higher than normal manifold pressure. So in turn, its not fueling enough and giving it the normal amount of spark advance which is too much for a boost application.

That is just my guess, but a mildly educated one.

Smoke on startup? You losing coolant and don't know where? Coolant would be white smoke, but it would likely be more than just on startup. A cold knock isn't really a sign of anything. My 97 sounds like the thing is going to throw a rod through the block on a cold morning. I'd lean more towards worn out valve guides letting oil drip into the valves/chambers and just burning off at startup. Pressure test the cooling system to see whats up there.

383 TBI + Blower is asking a lot of the TBI fuel system. If you really want to keep the blower, I would just build a fresh 4 bolt 350, maybe Vortec heads or some aftermarket street style head, and get a custom tune done. Fueling a 383 can be tricky with TBI, same goes for a blown TBI engine. Add the two together and good luck. If you call up Comp Cams they would recommend a good camshaft for your application as well. Might try looking for a late 90s 350(Vortec engine). Then you have a set of Vortec heads and a roller cam setup. A good fresh engine, with some decent flowing heads, and a nice roller cam could work nicely in combo with that huffer. Just got to bump the compression down a bit(Vortecs are upper 9s stock), and get a good custom chip burned for your application.

Thanks for the input. Yea it came with all the electronics, chip, fuel pump. It ran okay for about a year with a fuel leak. Oh also another problem. PCV valve pops out everytime I lift off throttle. Have tried replacing with a filter for blow by, still pops out. I also have excessive carbon build up. The smoke is very faint, it dissipates less than a foot out of the exhaust however, I see water (possibly coolant) faint sweet smell from exhaust. Cracked Head? I have looked at the Vortec heads, however this takes a new intake, and I dont really want more custom fab than I need. I understand that the main dissadvantage to stock TBI heads is poor design, not volume. Thus i believe this would be minimalized by boost. How can I "fix" the ECM? I agree the supercharged 383 seems expensive and iffy. Looking at RMCR performace for work. Anyone heard of them?

I don't know what exactly you are looking for, but here are two links that I have looked at this last week, about more power with the TBI configuration:

Check out the blower setup for a TBI engine and a nice TBI 383 that compares favorably to the GMPP HT383
