im getting my engine rebuilt on my 1987 k5. Im thinking of putting a cam in it. If i put a cam in it am i going to need a performance chip? Does the computer need any programing?

have you narrowed down your cam choices? are you going to do any head work to support the cam? do you plan on upgrading the TB and exhaust?

how do you plan on using this engine? more importantly, what rpm range will this truck see? short answer you'll probably need a chip burned to take advantage of the new timing events. lot of variables to consider........like a domino effect.

I am not an expert, but I am pretty sure you will need to reprogram the ECM if you do anything other than a mild cam. The computer in the TBI is programmed specifically for the engine in stock form.

I have seen several people post links to this site, perhaps it can help:

This page discusses the cam:

x2 on this.

and look here for tons of tbi info .

and specifics here.

lots of guys do lt1 cam swap. easy and cheep free hp with roller cam swaped in.

also grab some comp cam roller tip rockers. little more free hp .

the cam and exaust if the 2 major restrictors on these motors. tbichips did full motor back with shorty headers. 2.5" pipes to single 3" pipe to high flow cat and muffler and got 40 hp to rear wheels alone. read the exaust info here and dyno print out. http://tbichips.com/blackmagic.htm

I have the same motor and did a rebuild. If a had to do it again I would go with a 383 kit. Just not enough power out of the stock turd they call a 350 V8.
