35's to 37's...too much for my axles?

the torque sustained by the axle shaft would be higher on the bigger tire because it torque is the product of force x radius arm. With a bigger tire, the radius arm(half of diameter) is larger as well as the force of friction(traction) so consequently, the larger tire can exert more torque on the axle shaft leading to failure.

Re: 35\'s to 37\'s...too much for my axles?

With all the discussion with traction and torque forces aside, go find someone with 37" SSR's and compare them to your SX's The 37" SSR's will only be about 35 to 35.5" in diameter, and the SX's usually tend to meet the advertized diameter. So in otherwords, I bet that you wont see much of a difference in circumfrence, will have less contact patch area, and the SX's weigh more than the SSR's. If'n your axles handle the SX's, they should be no worse off with the 37" SSR's

So to sum up. I believe taller is harder to get to move, wider has more traction, lockers aren't always the answer, some guy really needs a dollar and it all really doesn't matter cuz apparently the tires are basically the same size. Does that about cover it?? /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

.....and when the axleshaft does break, either a 35" tire will fall out of the axle housing, or a 37" tire will!!!!

The 35" TSL SX is 34.8" tall. The 37" TSL SSR is 36.8".

Don't believe the advertised diameter for the SSR's I measured Steve Fox's 37" SSR's when he got them, and they turned out to be about 35 1/2" new and fully inflated on 16 x 10 rims

Re: 35\'s to 37\'s...too much for my axles?

Well I probably won't be buying the SX's again. They absolutely kick butt off road, just freakin' amazing. But they kinda suck on surface roads that have the slightest of grooves or imperfections. Smooth rodes, no problem, but on the surface roads that are all eaten up around here because of the heat and poor maintenance, this thing wanders like a booze hound on free beer day at the ball park!
