3.42 gears and a 6L80 transmission with a 5.3 v8. how bad would this combination be. im sorry, i do not own a K5, i own a 2011 silverado but i could not get a solid answer from other websites and after seeing several posts about the same machines, i decided to give it a try here. ive been told 35s would completely dog down the truck. but ive also heard that with the 6-speed transmission and 3.42 gears that 35s shouldnt bee too bad. the truck will be a daily driver with a split between city and highway driving. and occasional mild offroader. it also pulls a relatively light mud boat on the weekends during hunting season. thanks in advance for any advice.

Gonna be a dog. Tire size effects final drive ratio. The number of gears in your tranny wont matter, just more to go through as the tranny is searching for the right gear that it cant find.

thats dissapointing. im leaning more towards a leveling kit and amall body lift and running 33x12.5x18 because of re-gearing.. i just love the look of a 6" lift and 35s

because of the price of gears+installation+voided warrenties on top of the price of the lift and tires :/

To be honest 3.42's would suck donkey balls with 35's. I doubt re gearing a late model GM IFS axle would be much fun either. I'm not an IFS guy so I could be wrong, but I have my doubts.

Save up and re-gear OR level it out and go with a 305/70-16 (or equivalent for whatever wheel you want).
I ran that size on my old K3500 and I loved them. They were big enough to stand out but not so big that it threw off the gearing. I had 4.10's in that truck and it was perfect. I think your 3.42's and 35's are going to leave you disapointed.

yea its a pain from what ive heard. im not to vehicle savvy but based off the price of installation and horror stories, it sounds like no fun

so ive heard.. well ive heard from multiple people with thr 5.3+3.42s+6L80s running 33x12.5 or similar 33" tires and all of which claimed to experience minimal power loss.

Believe it or not, but going up just 2" in tire size drastically changes your gearing. Google a gear calculator and put in the info and it will tell you what gears you would need with that combo. Also based on the info you gave I will assume you have the 1500 model. Now remember GM never designed those front ends for 35's so you could be asking for trouble down the line. Even the older solid axle 1/2 tons were iffy with 35's.

but with a 33 they should be fine, right? and yes, it is a 2011 Silverado 1500 z71 LT
EDIT: i have ran a truck with the same engine and the 4 speed transmission with 3.73s and 285/70/17s and noticed almost no power loss

Ooo Ooo I know. It's a brand spankin' NICE NEW TRUCK. Get outta here before we tear it up, install a cage and SAS it. Leave it stock and enjoy it. :)

well theres one thing for sure, from what ive heard id much rather run a 33" tire with my current gears rather than a 35" tire..

i CANT enjoy it enough bone stock =[ i HAVE to do something to it, i just want to make sure its done right and without sacrificing all ride quality and fuel economy..

Remember when looking at tires to look at the actual size. Most 35s aren't really that size.

But yah everyone here is right a 35 would be doable but it would affect the truck quite allot.

33 would obliviously affect it less
