373\'s and 35\" tires

I want 4:56's, but I know it'll be a while befor I can swap gears. So will 373 gears be okay with 35" tires on my 76 Blazer with a 400 small block and TH350/NP-203 ???? It's still fulltime and I think I'll keep the fulltime couse I like the way it handles.

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

It will dog a bit, but it won't be undrivable by any means. It will sure make you want to get the 4.56s sooner though. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I know Shewheeler has been running 3.73s with 35s for at least a few years now.

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

I had 3.73's and 35's for while. Ive got a stock 350/700 and it wasnt bad at all. I just went to 4.56's when I got my 36's. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

I'm running that setup now. If you run any hills especially on the Interstate it will make you mad. Passing is a real PITA with those gears. Be sure and maintain your tranny, maybe put a cooler in it. I had to rebuild mine.

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

The 3.73's won't be totally undriveable with 35's. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif But I wouldn't go with 4.56's and 35's behind a non-overdrive tranny. I've got a Turbo 400, 4.10's and 35's and the engine is really singing on the highway. 4.56's would have you cruising in the slow lane or revving the snot out of your engine. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

Im not certain, but I get plenty of pep out of my 373's and 35's. nothing totally neck snapping, but eough to beat hondas off the line. Perhaps its that low first gear of the 700R4?

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

Yep, with the 700R4's first gear, 3.73's are more like 4.56's would be behind a Turbo 350, so it will launch off the line pretty good. But once you get up to speed, the engine lugs on the highway in overdrive. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I think first gear in a 350 is around 2.48:1 and in a 700R4 it's 3.06:1. So the overall gear ratio in 1st is:

Turbo 350: 2.48*4.56=11.3088
700R4: 3.06*3.73= 11.4138

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

Not to necessarily hijack this thread, but my big debate is whether to go with 4:10 or 4:56 with my 35's (350/203). If I am driving highway, I don't plan on hauling a$$, so that might be my answer right there. If I find the 14 bolt with 4:56, I'll probably just go with that.

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

If you can find a 14b with whatever gear size, i'd do that, and save the extra money from re-gearing to regear the front. I spent 1k to rebuild my 10b rear end with a eaton. Had my brain acutally been screweed in properly, I would have gotten a 14b. I cant see myself going bigger than 35's (thats what I said when i went from 31's to 33's). But if you upgrade to a 14b now, you can always go bigger.

I've always been an engine lugger. Not to the point of bogging it, but I like to keep the rpms low. Even on my stang, I shift into 5th at like 2000 rpm. Well.. except when doing the fun stuff. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

My sitting on my ass at home has made my mind weak. But Here's what I would recommend- Do the gear calculation that was listed above, use that gear/tire size calculator, and figure out your final engine RPM at your desired cruise speed. That will give you base line calculations. Then you can fiddle with your optimum acceleration gears. (my guess is probably the 4.10's would be optimal, but you'll upgrade to 37's .. hehehee).

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

Getting the 14b is definitely going to happen and was never in question. I've already got the 8 lug D44, but it just needs to be regeared to match the junkyard 14b. Supposedly 4:56s are as common (if not more) than 4:10 in the Jyard.

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

Not to be an a**hole or anything, hey wait, I got called nice yesterday by the older hottie so I've got to make some space up......

Anyway, if you were to peruse the 73-87 Forum a little bit, this same thread was going for a little bit about a week or so ago. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

If future plans include larger tires than definitely go with 4.56's. I wouldn't go with 3.73's, I would at least run 4.11's with 35's. I ran 4.56's and 35's for awhile and it was fun. Now I need 5.13's with these 39.5's.

P.S. TH350 = 2.52:1 1st gear LOL

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

I run 4:56 gear sets now with 38.5TSL/SX's and I wished I had opted for the 5:13's instead!

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

I just found out, after i took the diff cover off, that i had 2.73's... i bought the truck 3 months ago with 35's on it, the front 2 were worn bad on the inside, which means these tires had been on for a while...now i have 4.56's with 36" TLS's..
question is...how much damage and where, if any, may this previous combination have caused?

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

To my understanding,
Large tires, plus highway gears equeals fawked up transmission.

Re: 373\'s and 35\" tires

35" with 4:56 would be bad juju...i have 4:56 with 37"s and i am still reving the piss out of my motor just tryin to keep with the flow of traffic...it sits at 3500 RPM on the freeway..i would like to see it more under 3000
