Detroit... well almost
I want highest torque as possible 383 under my hood... keeping in mind that I want to do the easiest change from 350 to 383 that's possible. Willing to spend the money needed.

Been reading up and researching the net. It seems that no crate engine supplier is free of hassle/complaint reports except for Goodwrench who stands by their warranty and makes it easier on the consumer.

Blueprint Engines has the easy bolt in tbi motor that I've seen recommended... but have seen poor reports about them on the net.

HT383 from Goodwrench is vortec... so I'd need new intake and ditch the headers I currently have??? Not my 1st choice.

Would all the tbi electronics and engine accesories/serpentine/brackets just bolt up? Know I'd also need a chip, injectors, and tb.

Unfortunately, I don't have any 1st hand experience with Detroit area engine builders or recommendations for any.

Anybody have recommendation they'd like to share on this?

Check out tbichips.com. Brian has/was working with an engine rebuilder to turn out motors that were "matched" already to his burned chips.

I think there is another thread where this came up too.

Interseted in this thread. Would love to swap a TBI 383 into my 91 burb when i have some play $$$.

wow... no offense, but that had to be one of the most disjointed, personally specifac posts I've ever seen..

what specifacally do you want to know?

which bolt in package will work with your headers? GM's HT package is a damn good choice for many..

if your expecting a tweaked tbi package without any work on your part, your crazy, or relying on something "out of the box" when thats a fairy tale to some extent.. carb, no prob, EFI, nother story...

matching your fuel needes to whatever your rotating assembly demands is what its all about..

personally, I'll be running a megasuirt system to a rather cammed TBI stroker..

Ha. No offense taken. Yeah... my post is specific to me. :p:

Want to know:
1. Anybody have 1st hand experience with good engine builders near Detroit that would be willing to work with my existing motor.
2. My current headers bolt up to tbi heads. If I go with HT383, would I have to ditch my thorley tri y's (get ones to work with vortec heads)?
3. Have stock tbi intake. If I go HT383, one option for intake is edelbrock (vortec w/ tbi)... any other recommendations for intake?
4. Will my stock accessories/serpentine/brackets/tbi electronics mount up to the HT383? This might be a dumb question, but I know what I know and don't know what I don't know if you get me.

Sorry for not making that clear. Reread my post and see your point. :doah:

I do expect to have to work with a chipmaker, get 454 or cop car injectors, and a new tb. Also, I'll do the wrenching to get the engine in and out as needed.

By the way Ryoken... wouldn't have gotten through my dual battery/ACR/etc etc etc upgrades without your posts. THANKS!

1. not me, im in arizona. But Larrys engine and marine down here builds awesome engines and will ship them too..
2. Yes, Vortec heads use your standard exhaust manifold package, nothing special
3. The edelbrock one is your best bet
4. Yes, everything will bolt up like a stock application.

Really appreciate the feedback! Glad I wouldn't have to ditch the headers!!!

Leaning toward the HT383 now.

You could also buy the 383 partial which doesn't come with heads and then either build your heads or purchase some TBI heads or aftermarket heads and install them on the 383 short block.

That's a good idea. Hadn't really considered that. I'm not very knowledgable on engine building obviously... but have friends that are ;).

I've read here that the tbi heads with mild porting can perform quite nicely on our trucks. I'll do some digging and see if building/porting heads is something I think I can tackle!

Its your build and your decision but the nice part about the vortecs is they are close to 30 horsepower from stock early model chevy heads and 40 horsepower from those tbi heads. Its a Win Win situation unless you get some nice aftermarket heads for it. HT383 would be the engine I would buy if I had the cash, great warrenty and lots of power.

The 383 in my newer chevy cost about the same. heres the specs

truck is a 99

scat 1 piece stroker crank
Scat I beam rods
Kieth black 19cc dish and they are in the hole .003
Vortec heads, light port work and extensive bowl and chamber work, milled and valve guides cut for .600 lift. Comp beehive springs and comp 1.6 Roller rockers.
Cam is a comp extreme roller fuel injection cam, its this one ( http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp+Cams/249/08-465-8/10002/-1 )

Now keep in mind that this is a newer chevy that comes factory with vortec heads. Larry said it should be in the 365HP range and over 400 torque. It cost $4,500 out the door as a complete engine with him reusing the heads and block.

It all depends on what you want. Horsepower is a Byproduct of torque so dont worry too much about the horsepower numbers.

I spent 2k on my 383 bottom end and my heads. I had to put it together but that is what I wanted.

That included my Eagle internal balance kit, and all the machining.

Try one of these guys.
