383 kit

I was surfing the web and found this site http://www.speedomotive.com.
They have quite a few 383 stroker kits and the price doesn't appear to be that bad. I've never actually replaced pistons and cranks in an engine (just a cam and lifters). What kind of labor charges could be expected if I get a garage to do this?

The budget kit is only $400 - not bad! Add $425 for Vortec heads and $175 for an intake manifold and you've got yourself an engine!
I've never put in pistons either, but I feel empowered so why not? I just got a core 350 that I'd like to build a 383 out of.
If you get any info on that 383 kit (or another) I'd like to hear it.

Yea I was thinking last night it might be a project to take on myself. Might just have to drive my dad's truck around for a month since this is my only vehicle

Informative site! Do you or anyone else have any word on the company and what their like to deal with? I have yet to visit my local machine shop but right now, SpeedoMotive's prices look alot better than Summit Racing's 383 kit!

Cool!! I'm gona ask for an engine stand for Xmas and givit a go!! I put pistions in a V6 long time ago with my dad tellin me what to do and the main thing I remember is use plenty of motor oil. We diped the whole piston in a coffee can full of oil then put on the ring compressor and pushed the piston in. Torque every thing to spec, assembly lube and lotts of oil!!

Hey guys,
No I haven't talked or dealt with the company yet...
I think I'm gonna look into the budget 383 kit also, I'm gonna ask them if they have any idea what kind of specs can be expected based on a stock 350 with the budget kit (no HP heads or anything like that, except for a new cam). I can't really afford the heads quite yet.

Burt4x4, Yea I was thinking about having my dad help me with the pistons also, he used to rebuild 350's for extra money, might take him a while too remember everything but I'm sure it will beat the labor charges.

I purchased the mighty mouse kit from Speed-o-motive and I could not be happier. They are very cool to deal with and they know their stuff. I would deal with them again for sure. Mine is just a few days away from firing off and I can hardly wait. It has the vortec heads and a extreme 4X4 cam from comp cams, some edelbrock goodies and afterburner headers.

I got all my stuff from speed-o-motive and they were real nice and answered all my questions. I got everything from them because they would know exactly what I have and need. I got them to balance my kit also. I'm having the bottom end built by a machine shop so it will be "right". Putting a motor together is one thing but putting one together that lives and lasts is another. My block is 60 over, flat top pistons, 4x4 comp cam, 64cc dart heads, and more. Mine is still at the machine shop. A detailed report will follow with prices and parts list and dyno sheet!
