i was reading an ad for a 383 stroker kit and it said the motor must be externally balanced.huh?will it use the same harmonic ballancer it used before it was stroked?how about the flexplate? /forums/images/icons/confused.gif

383 stroker uses a 400's crank. Now isn't the 400cid small block Chevy externally ballanced ??? So it makes sence to externally ballance the 383 stroker.

The normal 383 stroker using a 400 crank, and most of the aftermarket cranks require external balancing. This means that you must use a 400 flywheel/flexplate, and a 400 harmonic balancer. There are some aftermarket stroker cranks avaiable that can be internally balanced. This means that you would have to pay an engine builder to balance the rotating assembly using mallory metal in the crankshaft counterweights, and this equals $$$.

My 388 took both. When I had it balanced, it required Mallory metal and the externally balanced harmonic dampner. My machine shop welds a weight onto the flywheel mounting flange so that a externally balanced flywheel is not needed.
