Okay so here is the maing question. Is there any place that manufacturers a 383 that I could actually get passed on inspection? I have a 1983 K5 with a stock 350. The previous owner has already pulled all the A.I.R Smog equipment out of the mix and it was pretty cleanly done. BUT if I swap in for the 383, what should I look out for legal wise. Anyone have any insight into this. I would like to have this done winter time since it will be pretty much parked in the shop.

A 383 is nothing more than a stroked 350 so from the outside it looks the same as any other SBC. Since it's an 83 then it's carbed and you should have anything to worry about.

That actually makes me sleep a little easier. It passes the way it is right now so that should make it virtually the same. They barely even pop the hood where i am at.

BTW , if your 83 has the original 350 , it can be dropped off to the machine shop and be made into the 383 . It would be kinda cool to make a numbers matching 383 , few 83's had a 350 from the factory , most had 305's , like over 75 percent had 305's

Yeah its stock. I actually thought about that. Guess I could call around and find out. I was leaning towards teh crate because of the warranty.

Your truck is now an antique by Texas standards (25 years old). Original smog equipment is supposed to be used but you shouldnt have to pass a sniffer test though.

Yeah we don't have the sniff test here yet. Not a big enough town. :D

Well then, you know the only thing you have to do is put all the smog stuff back on at least long enough to go to the inspection station. ;)

you sure its a 350.

go for it, the changes are internally, bigger pistons longer travel, more compression.:D
