383 Vortec Quadrajet Cam selection, other Qs

I've got pistons, rods, and crank from a 97 vortec that's just taking up space if you need it. You can have the block to if needed.

Reading this thread a bit. You stated that your building a 383 and wanted cam advice. What's your horse power level your wishing to attain?
Kinda important to have a number in mind.
Say if your looking for 325 horse, you don't need a high lift cam to achieve that, there is no need to stress about the spring and studs and all the related stuff your stressing about.

Thank you very much for the kindness sir. I'm about to head back to Albuquerque for the spring semester, but if my old man and my little brother can't get 8 good connecting rods together perhaps we'll come your way. Georgetown isn't far from Austin at all.

In terms of a number it would be swell to get 400 HP and 450 ftlbs or so, all in a streetable and wheelable setup with the SM465, 3.73 yukon posi, and 35"s.

Of course budget is limited, and we have a reliability threshold to make as well as it is going to be my little brothers daily starting 10th grade. That being said if the difference between 300 hp and 350 ft lbs and 400 hp and 450 ft lbs is a $1750 motor vs a $2000 motor, we'll do our best to make it work.

A proper 383 can sneeze and make 400hp these days. In all honesty 400 is plenty of power for a 16 year old.

(I just spec'ed some flat tappet cams to keep it simple and give you the idea of numbers to look for)

I would use this to keep it under the stock limitations of the vortec heads.

If your willing to do the correct work to the heads use this cam.

My thoughts on heads echo what's already been said. Scrap the vortec heads and go aftermarket. It's money well spent. I too have went down the vortec head route. And ended up going aftermarket.
I know you said that your not looking for input on that type of thing. But it's just guys that been in a similar spot trying to heed some advice to you.
Take it or don't.

I just built a 350 from CL offerings. Mid 70's block with 062 vortecs. Heads had 200k on em. Hot tanked and inspection. I used the comp retainers with new LS3 valve springs. Works great. I used a mild summit K1103 can. It's flat tappet and pulls like a freight train. Keep a good eye on your parts and measure everything. Definitely buy new lifters, they are inexpensive. Enjoy.
